After investigation of the effect of hot-working and alloying elements on the mechanical properties of 0.3%C-0.5%Mn base steels, the following results were obtained.
    (1) The hardness decreased and the value of elongation increased by hot-working for allmost evely steels.
    (2) The hardness depended upon volume fraction of ferrite, which is mainly influenced by austenite grain size and recrystallization ratio after hot-working.
    (3) The effect of alloying elements on recrystallization during hot-working was clarified.

In order to save Mo in Cr-Mo steels for automobile components, medium carbon-boron steels were investigated. Boron is a popular alloying element for structural steels, however, to date boron steels have not been widely used because of their unstable hardenability and poor machinability. Therefore, in this study, the optimum content of boron was reexamined, and also the appropriate addition of Ti as a stabilizer of boron was investigated from the view point of hardenability. Furthermore the upper limit of Mn content was studied to keep good machinability. The new steel grades, established on the basis of the above fundamental research, have been applied to vital components of passenger cars, and exhibited the same performance as that of Cr-Mo steel.

In order to develop a minimal distortion steel on case hardening, effects of Mn and Cr content on the hardenability that affects the distortion in quenching after carburization have been studied. Furthermore machinability, mechanical and carburizing properties have been examined.
The optimum chemical composition of new carburizing steel was found to be 0.28%C-1.0%Mn-0.6%Cr and bal. Fe.
The characteristics of this steel is equivalent to that of SCM420 and the distortion after case hardening is smaller than that of SCM420.
The low distortion characteristics of new carburizing steel is supposed to result from the suppression of the bainite and martensitic transformation at the core region.

The strength of microalloyed medium carbon steels is significantly affected by chemical compositions and the conditions in hot forging. The effect of chemical compositions on the hardness of medium carbon steels is first investigated and is introduced as “Hardness Equivalent Parameter”, Heq. by the authors. According to this parameter, it becomes possible to design the steel for automobile components with various strengths. The effect of hot working conditions on the hardness of the microalloyed steels is examined and the proper processing conditions for them has been obtained.
After research programs have been conducted, the running test of engine and suspension components built-in a passenger car are carried out, and the authors have certified that the microalloyed steels possess satisfactory properties as forged.

Extremely high quality is required for specialty steels employed for automobile components. Therefore, careful consideration was given to maintain high purity, homogeneity and sufficient reduction ratio prior to the introduction of a continuous casting machine.
With this machine it became possible to produce not only steels with outstanding cold forgeability and fatigue strength but also to produce steels with highly homogeneous hardenability, machinability and distortion.
Furthermore, estimation tests were carried out for automobile components and it was confirmed that continuously cast steels were performing as well as those of ingot cast steels.

It is well known that only a small additions of boron remarkably improve hardenability of steel. Therefore, for the purpose of saving mineral resources such as nickel and molybdenum, substituting boron steel for low alloy structural steel is now being desired.
However, its compound in steel, analytic value and effect on the hardenability change complicatedly by thermal history and their correlation hasn't been clarified yet.
This paper discusses thermodynamically the behavior of boron in steel containing Al, Ti, N, C and conducts formulae for the calculation of matrix solved boron in steel which is heated to austenite temperature range.
Calculated values of matrix solved boron agree well with analyzed acid soluble boron and they also correspond well to Jominy distances to 50% martensite.

A varieties of small lot production and complicated processes are the principal forms of specialty-steel manufacturing. However, the amount of rolled products in Chita Plant, the largest specialty-steel plant in the world, exceeds 130, 000mT per month. This large tonnage could not be achieved without the computerized manufacturing systems including production-planning, process-controlling and quality-assurance programs. This paper, describes MERODY-System (Melting and Bloom Rolling Dynamic Control System) which makes the basis of the whole systems.
    MERODY consists of, fundamentally,
    (1) Schedule and technical-planning by dialogues between planners and computer;
    (2) On-line process-controlling with various sub-systems and direct instructions through CRT displays to work shops.
This system had been developed in 1978 as the first step, and it was revised with a new large computer (ACOS 800-III) in 1980 in response to the installation of the new continuous casting machine. And at the present time, the efficient production of specialty steels with satisfactory properties are conducted through this system.

Recently, the advantages of the continuous casting process of steel, which include an improved product yield, energy saving, an improved working environment and an improvement of product quality, have come to be widely recognized. An outline of the history of continuous casting process is described in the paper. The paper outlines recent developments of technologies as follows:
    (1) Reduction of the surface defects.
    (2) Reduction of the internal defects.
    (3) Improvement of the productivity.
    (4) Automation.
A summary of expectations for future developments of technologies with regard to productivity and product quality is also given. Finally, attention is drawn to the future developments of horizontal continuous caster and synchronized continuous caster of steel.
