    The deadbeat tracking problem and the deadbeat servo problem are considered for discrete-time linear systems. The plant and the reference are described by a difference equation. The problems are solved in the framework of exact model matching problem. The desired models for deadbeat tracking and deadbeat servo are specified first and then the system is realized as a generalized feedback control that admits both the plant output and the reference variable as input. The class of deadbeat tracking controller and the deadbeat servo are shown explicitly. It is also shown that this generalized feedback is general enough to alter the dynamic behaviour of the plant almost at will.

    An analytical solution of one dimensional heat conduction equation is derived. Further, a practical and fast algorithm is proposed for the prediction calculation of slab heating temperature.
    The algorithm uses the analytical solution.
    The proposed algorithm has a great advantage in reduction of computation time over the difference equation method.
    As the proposed algorithm takes into account the nonlinearity of thermal constants, the computation accuracy is expected to be nearly equal to that of the difference equation method.
    From several numerical examples, it is assured that the proposed algorithm in this paper is in practical use and it is applied to the prediction calculation of heating temperature of slabs in a continuous reheating furnace.

    In this study, emissivities of metals-steels, titanium alloy and aluminum-have been measured and analized for the better utilization of radiation thermometry. In the experimentation, true temperatures were determined by thermocouple to compare with the luminance temperatures which were measured by two types of radiation thermometer, one is for high temperature range (600°C∼1600°C) using Si-photo diode as a thermal sensor and the other is for medium range (250°C∼850°C) by Ge-photo diode.
    Results of this investigation are summarized as follows.
    (1) In the case of steels, the emissivity can be fixed to 0.8 regardless of kind of steel.
    (2) In the case of titanium alloys, the setting must be adjusted from 0.6 to 0.83 according to the alloy content, especially to content of vanadium, to reduce the measuring error.
    (3) Emissivity of aluminum is very small, which has a value of about 0.2, so it is important to set the value correctly for accurate measurement.

    A new radiation thermometer designed by C.R. Laboratory Daido Steel, has been put to practical use for a medium temperature range from 250°C to 850°C. The thermometer has two types, one is portable and the other is stationary one. Several technical improvements are adopted in order to get a high accuracy at the low temperature measurement of which the major ones are, optical chopping system, multi-stage amplification circuit controlled by micro-computer and the linearising using a conversion software.
    These improvements enables the new thermometer to hold a high accuracy (±5°C), small diameter of object to be measured (15mm) and high responsibility (70∼150msec.).

    During a steelmaking arc furnace operation, wave forms of the voltage and current respectively are usually distorted considerably and undergo irregular changes from time to time.
    In this study, relevant kinds of arc furnace power were analyzed based on these wave forms of phase voltage and current by utilizing computer technology.
    Authors have developed a digitalized measuring device for the pourpose of more accurate quantitative measurement of the electrical characteristic values based on physical definition applied to the distorted waves, and tested.
    The results obtained are as follows:
    (1) Value of apparent power obtained by product of root-mean-square voltage and root-mean-square current is considerably larger than the power obtained by root-sum-square of active power and reactive one for the corresponding period.
    The fact seems to lead us into confusion for evaluation of power factor and/or apparent reactance of arc furnaces under operation.
    (2) For accurate measuring of electrical chracteristic values on arc furnace operation, a computerized measuring device is most suitable.

    The Machinery Div. of Daido Steel has developed the electric smelting treatment system of municipal incinerator residue using submerged arc furnace.
    This system has many merits as follows.
    (1) The effect of volume reduction: reducing ratio of volume is about 1/2.
    (2) The effect of making it harmless.: the slag produced by smelting treatment is harmless, because heavy metals in it are not dissolved in water.
    (3) The slag can be reused as a roadbase material.
    In order to design this system, we constructed and operated the test plant (treatment scale: 25ton/day), and collected many available data. besides the advantages written above, easy operation for continuous slag off and the electrical stability such as low flicker and low negative phase current have been proved. The automatic operation of this system is also confirmed to be possible.
