    Recently computing technologies are being revolutionized with improvement of small computers' abilities, advancement of networking technologies and so on.
    Therefore, a great revolution era is coming when we need to make suitable decisions by further considering the current trend of industrial restructuring and sense of values in society where we are required to build a strategic plan for our systems.
    This paper shows the status quo of information systems at Daido Steel Co., Ltd. with system restructuring of speciality steel dept. in the last several years, and further, describes several schemes of efficiency for computer division.

    Sales Information System (SIS) was rebuilt up to cope with marketing competition getting harder by improving customer services and changing the way of business of sales departments. SIS was built to administrate sales information, production information and distribution information as a whole. This system consists of four sub-systems, which are “Daido network service”, “Order entry system”, “Order adjusting system”, “Specification administration system” and “Price administration system”. Daido network service system exchanges information data such as order application, process progress, storing, shipping, millsheet and so on with users, trading companies and service centers.
    This system went into service in May 1991, and it has enjoyed good reputations from users since then. New functions have been already added.

    Daido Steel started the system re-build up project for sales, production and distribution of steel bar and wire rod in 1988.
    Its main purpose was the realization of production control to take a serious view on delivery date priority. A new preparation system of production control was requested for realization of this purpose.
    The newly built preparation system consists of two sub-systems. One of them is production design system. It was re-built in system suitable for new production control. Another of them is order entry control system. It was newly developed for automatic checking of the required delivery date of each order.
    The preparation system was completed in 1991 and the system operation started. Now, among the orders entried to Chita Plant, 90% of which are completed production design within the entry day, and the checking results of the required delivery date are available on each terminal of sales and production departments on the next day.

    Production Management systems had been restructured in Daido Steel since 1988, and they have been in use availably.
    The one of main purposes for restructuring was to change ‘product-out’ to ‘market-in’.
    This paper describes the outline of three representative restructured systems and a hierarchical process control system at Chita & Hoshizaki Plant.
    These systems are the followings.
    a. Scheduling system for billet with 2 heats rolling process at Chita Plant.
    b. Production control system of wire rod processing at Hoshizaki Plant.
    c. Scheduling system for wire rod processing at Hoshizaki Plant.
    d. Production control system of small round section bar inspection and conditioning at Chita Plant.

    There were several problems in distribution & transportation section of Daido Steel Co., Ltd.. Some of them were “old-fashioned shipping work”, “increase of customer's demands”, “scattered small medium type warehouses”, and “increase of distribution costs”.
    And it was an urgent necessity to down the distribution costs and meet the customer's demands.
    Therefore, it was decided to make “Basic plan of distribution improvement”, and set up the targets which include “settling of just-in-time delivery”, “cutting down the distribution costs” and “total distribution improvement, from order reception to delivery”.
    The purpose of “Distribution control system” is to meet the needs of customers and distribution section by improving following items.
    Improvement of shipping work at plants: Locating products, checking of shipping products.
    Improvement of warehouses work: Simplification of loading and unloading dataentry into a computer.
    Improvement of total distribution: Strengthening the support to sales division. Sharing information with production control system. Improvement in support of distribution subsidiary companies.
    Now, each system is up and running favorably.
    After this, we will go ahead toward a better control system that is closely connected with “Customers-Sales division-Production-Delivery”, according to the system based on “Basic plan of distribution improvement”.

    General management system consists of six sub-systems (Material purchasing management, Sales & collection management, Cost management, Human affairs & salary, Debt & credit management and Accounting) and offers management information after processing corporate information.
    This paper reports opinions on current problems, introducing outline of six sub-systems.
    As for general control system, how substantiality of information system will be realized with low cost is our future important subject.

    The CAE application in engineering began in earnest in 1978.
    Before then, original programs by means of FORTRAN were performed for each special purpose.
    Therefore, we could not apply to any other analysis field. In 1978, the general purpose finite element program (NASTRAN) was introduced, and now we can solve four fields of structural analysis, fluid analysis, thermal conduction analysis and electro-magnetic analysis.
    The CAD application in engineering has begun in earnest by introduction of CADAM to host computer in 1982. Present number of terminals are 43 (for CADAM) and its response time is 0.5 second on average.
    This paper describes the CAE/CAD application in engineering.

    With recent progress of CASE (Computer Aided Software Engineering), it has been put into practical use to mechanize software development and maintenance. However, it is so early for us to change to whole use of CASE that we had to make a steady effort to improve software productivity.
    This paper describes the following 4 points that Information Systems Department of Daido Steel has improved in the software productivity.
    a. The software productivity improvement campaign by whole members of Information Systems Department.
    b. APOLO which is the tool to draw up a knowledge-base of application rule.
    c. The collection system of man-hour through the software development and maintenance.
    d. Our concept to utilize CASE.

    Daido Steel Co., Ltd developed a computerized on-line production control system using data communication network named COPS in Chita plant in 1974. Since then, our data communication network has been growing wider and more rapid, and it has been applied to various uses.
    We started using HD (High-speed Digital line) among offices and plants, and integrating data and voice communication in 1986.
    The characteristics of our communication network are:
    •Toll dial (telephone, FAX, personal computer communication)
    •Connection of all computers and terminals (DNS)
    •Inter-corporate communication network (DAIDO-NET), and the aims of expansion are:
    •Higher grade •More reliability •Better economy.

    Recently, there has been a rapid development of the technical innovation in a H/W architecture, allowing EWS (Engineering Work Station) to achieve such a performance as to be comparable to the performance of the main frame computer. Thus, since about 1992, there has been a marked tendency to extend the application of EWS which has been limited to academic or engineering use, to computer systems for business use. It has become a popular way to construct a computer system on the basis of the Down-sizing concept.
    Now, the author will explain the attitude of Daido Steel Company to such a tendency of application of Down-sizing system to business use and some examples thereof.
    In the author's view, the merits of Down-sizing system are as follows:
    (1) We can develop a system under the OPEN environment using highly cost effective products of H/W and S/W freely from the vender's restriction:
    (2) We can expand the range of the computer system's application through the user-friendly operation using GUI and Object oriented programming: and
    (3) We can reduce the total cost of computer systems.
    In principle, we will use Down-sizing approach to our new system developments and adopt 4 types of basic style; a planning assistant system, a support system of information reference, a support system of an accumulation of printing outputs, and a production control system at a small plant.

    Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be the core technology for the future computer application systems. And it will be an indispensable technology to promote the intelligent system.
    In the steel industry, AI technologies have been actively applied to make higher intelligent systems. Recently, many AI applications have effectively worked.
    At Daido Steel Co., Ltd., a study of AI technology has started since 1987. And then, AI center was organized in the Information and Systems Department in 1988.
    This paper describes the AI technology development (such as Expert system, Neural network and Fuzzy ) and Daido's approach as the following.
    (1) Material selection system for injection mold.
    (2) Scheduling system (2 types).
    (3) Trouble shooting system for molding using Neural network.

    Daido Steel has introduced stand alone type of word processor since early 1980's in order to improve the efficiency of staff duties.
    Thereafter we have put package softwares to practical use, which have the functions of spreadsheet, data processing, graphic design, and so on.
    Recently most staff people can make the most use of those softwares as education advances and number of intelligent terminal increase.
    This paper describes the short history of our OA (Office Automation) application and the outline of our recent topics which covers electronic communication (electronic mail, electronic bulletin board) and EUC (End User Computing).

    Like in other industries, automation, labor-saving and high efficiency of plant control system for the iron and steel industry have been proceeded by adopting DDC system to instrument control system and synthesis of electric instruments and computer systems.
    In this paper we introduce the most suitable control system for RH Vacuum Degassing Equipment, which is one of the representative products of machinery division of Daido Steel. Also this paper describes future themes of control systems.

    Most municipal refuse is treated by incineration plants. As an environmentally-friendly approach, the ash melting plants which have been introduced in recent years will convert the ash to a pollution-free slag and reduce its volume.
    This paper describes the supervisory and control system.
    Its features include:
    (1) The practical application of the EIC (Electrical control, Instrumentation and Computer) integration system.
    (2) The user-friendly operation system and accurate process management.
    (3) Combining high powered computer controls with instrumentation.
    (4) Environmentally durable sensors.
