The electric characteristics of carbon dioxide laser depend on the deterioration of electrodes and gases, and the instability, namely the voltage increase of glow discharge, and the constriction arc is apt to be brought about.
The phenomena was inverstigated experimentally by using the experimental apparatus.
Moreover the cathode mechanism and the positive column of glow discharge was pursued theoretically. And followings are clarified.
First, the instability is independent of materials and the strain of electrodes. Second, the oxygen concentration in the laser gases due to CO
2 dissociation or outgases brings about the instability. Third, glow voltage increase is caused by not the cathode mechanism but the positive column mechanism, and it is caused through the influence to the electron density. Fourth, the equation derived theoretically in the text is compared with the results of the measurements and its usefulness is shown.
Consequently, the voltage increase of glow discharge, one of the instability phenomena, is clarified experimentally and theoretically. This methode is applicable to other discharge, namely the pulsed laser discharge.
