Since its foundation, the power system of Chubu Electric Power Company (hereinafter CEPCO) has developed through power source and transmission facility formation to meet electricity demand increases. This development has been accompanied by progress in transmission technologies including capacity scale-up, compactification and power system stabilization to operate complex power systems. Now, changes in business situation due to electricity market liberalizatin may bring new challenges to future facility formation. This paper reviews CEPCO's history of power system formation and progress in transmission technologies, and describes future challenges.

After reorganization of power industry in 1951, power system of Japan was remarkably expanded. To cope with this, R&D in vast area was conducted in the academy, MITI, electric power companies, manufactures, and research institutes. This paper generally describes the technical contents that the three research institutes, namely Electrotechnical Laboratory (ETL), High Voltage Power Laboratory (HVPL), and Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI), have contributed to the development of power transmission technology after the war.

During our work in operations related to power transmission technology, we have encountered various natural calamities and man-made disasters. Over the years, we learned many valuable lessons from these bitter experiences, and we now have more reliable, cost-effective and flexible electric power systems. This paper describes the new technologies we have introduced in the facilities making up the power systems and how we operate these systems and facilities. It also takes up the Southern Hyogo Earthquake and loss of Ohi nuclear power generation due to galloping phenomena as typical examples showing how a set of measures as mentioned above substantially improved the reliability of the electric power systems to such an extent that the Japanese electric power systems have attained the world's highest level of reliability. These facts prove that steady and continuous efforts are a prerequisite to success for all power engineers.

DG position in the utility grid changes greatly from the historical viewpoint of power system engineering. For the secure & safe operation of renewable and distributed generation, the harmonized grouping of DG plants and the careful interconnection of the grouped DG to the existing bulk grid are essentially important. The mandatory requirements for the DG group are the kW-balancing of DG output and local demand, and the voltage regulation in the group. It is necessary to contribute the ancillary service not to give worse disturbances to the exiting utility power grid. Under the support of NEDO grant, the pilot projects of DG grouping have been demonstrated in Japan.

This paper describes how Kyushu EPCO (Electric Power Co.) has strategically developed over time cutting-edge technologies for its power system in line with the geographical characteristics and social environment of the Kyushu area. Focus is placed on three remarkable accomplishments: technological development to structure an efficient power transmission system taking into account the unique locations of power generating facilities and power demand; measures to improve power system stability in Kyushu, which is located at the terminal end of the west Japan 60Hz power system; and technical solutions to interconnect a long-distance cable between Kyushu's main island and remote islands.

In the thermal environment observation of urban built spaces, the reflected emission from the facing surface is shown as a problem. Because it causes errors of the radiant temperature observed. This paper describes the new method to observe the urban thermal environment with the spherical thermograph system and 3D thermogram, which enables us to obtain the surface temperature from radiation measurement by removing reflection from the observed thermograph.
