Background: There is a long history of observations suggesting that psychological stress contributes to exacerbation of ulcerative colitis (UC). However, there have been few reports describing psychosomatic findings. Therefore, we measured salivary chromogranin A concentration (CgA), one of the indices of psychological stress, in patients with UC. Subjects: Sixteen patients with UC (9 males and 7 females, aged 14 to 60 years old), and 14 normal adults were studied. Method: After taking rest for 5 minutes, we sampled the saliva by using a cylindrical piece of cotton which was placed beside the tongue in the oral cavity, so that the secreted saliva was absorbed by the cotton for 3min. Afterward, we measured salivary CgA by the EIA method. We also performed IBDQ which is disorder specific QOL questionnaire and psychological test (SDS, STAI, POMS). Results: We compared the salivary CgA of the UC patients with that of normal controls. The result showed that the CgA level in UC patients tended to be higher than in normal controls, but there was no significant difference. Additionally, there was no significant difference in the salivary CgA levels between the patients with moderate UC and mild UC. However, according to the severity determined before induction point, the salivary CgA of the group of the intractable UC was significantly higher than that of the non-intractable UC group (p=0.013) and that of the normal controls (P=0.021). But the scores of IBDQ ware not significantly different between the groups of intractable UC and non-intractable UC, and there was no significant difference between the two groups in the psychological test. There was no significant correlation between both CgA and the psychological test, and CgA and IBDQ. There was discrepancy between CgA as an objective psychological index and scores by questionnaire as a subjective psychological index. Conclusion: It is suggested that psychological stress contributed to the course of group of intractable UC, and that measurement of salivary CgA levels may be a useful method to evaluate the psychosomatic state of the patients with UC.

Recently, over 100,000 junior high school students in Japan refuse to attend school. The decrease in attendance is assumed to be a sign of maladjusted behaviors and is conceived to be a serious social problem. It is important to clarify characteristics of the student's personality in order to improve their school attendance rates. We carried out the tree drawing test for 37 junior high school students (20 males and 17 females) to examine the relationship between their classroom attendance and personality characteristics. In addition, we carried out the two paper questionnaires, Satisfaction with School Life Scale and Motivation with School Life Scale. The result of having analyzed the questionnaire showed that the lack of attendance at school was connected with the lowness of a feeling that they belong to the class, and the lowness of motivation to take a proper course of study. According to the tree drawing test, children who have poor attendance rates drew trees with a weak brushstroke. Furthermore, these same children drew a tree top with a notched shape in it. The features of these tree drawing tests reveal that they might have feeling of depression, maladjustment, a conservative tendency and oversensitivity. The results of this research suggests that improvemens in the depressive or maladjusted mode might improve students' overall school attendance. In conclusion, this study clarifies that there exists a relationship between junior high school students attendance rates and certain features of the tree drawing test.

This study examined eating attitudes in early adolescents and pre-adolescents, using EAT-26. To search differences between areas, sexes and grades, the examination is done for boys and girls in upper grades of elementary schools and middle schools in local and urban areas, Gunma and Osaka prefectures. Participants are 2354 boys and girls, 1524 in 5^<th> 6^<th> grades in elementary and middle schools in Gunma and 830 in 4^<th>, 5^<th> 6^<th> grades of elementary schools and middle schools in Osaka. A total of 2242 subjects, excluding unavailable responses and students in 4^<th> grade, are analyzed. As the result of analysis of variance (ANOVA), the average of EAT score in Gunma (3.48) is significantly lower than in Osaka (5.04), boys' average of EAT score (3.42) is significantly lower than that of girls (4.68). Differences between grades (5^<th>:3.47, 6^<th>:2.47, 7^<th>:4.40, 8^<th>:4.62, 9th:4.42) are also significant. Significant also differences are found in interaction between grades and areas, and sexes and grades. Percentage of those who indicate more than 20 points of EAT score also increased in Osaka compared to Gunma. It is concluded that, in urban areas, problematic eating attitudes are more widespread among both pre-adolescent boys and girls and sexual difference tends to be on the decrease. In elementary schools, eating attitudes of boys and girls may be much influenced by other factors.
