These last 10 years, many universities and colleges in Japan have been reforming their admission systems and, at the same time, conducting research evaluating the reformations. Since entrance examination data is confidential, however, research reports are rarely published creating a situation impeding the sufficient discussion of research methods used in the reform. In this paper, we proposed an approach for evaluating admission systems based on several indices and methods developed by The National Center for University Entrance Examinations. The approach evaluates the system from two points of view. The first considers functional aspects of the system and the latter properties of system input and output, viz., applicants and entrants. The authors applied this approach to the entrance examination data of the Faculty of Law, Hokkaido University and demonstrated its efficacy.
