Time-dependent mechanical properties of high modulus CFRP have been studied by both time-dependent deformation tests and computational analyses. Time-dependent compliance modulus S22 and S66 were measured by the time-dependent deformation tests of CFRP [90]8 and [±45]s specimens respectively at several temperature levels (333-373 K). Then, the master curves of S22 and S66 were obtained. The analysis program for time-dependent deformation was developed on the basis of these time-dependent properties ; a finite element method is applied to this program and the inplane time-dependent deformation can be analyzed for symmetrically laminated CFRP structures with any laminate constitution. Then, time-dependent deformation of [±45/90]s, [±30]s CFRP laminated plates was discussed by both the results of 5 h time-dependent deformation tests and the predictions calculated by the analysis program. The predictions on the CFRP laminated plates are in good agreement with the experimental results ; this demonstrates that this analytical method is effective for the time-dependent deformation analysis of CFRP laminated plates.

Temperature dependence of mechanical properties of the hybrid material built up from many thin aluminum alloy sheets (A 5086) and unidirectional CFRP prepreg layers was investigated within the range from room temperature to 150°C. Tensile elastic moduli and failure strength of the hybrid material were stable regarding temperature changes from room temperature to 150°C. On the other hand, bending properties had a temperature dependence. Bending elastic modulus in the direction paralled to the fibers was stable from room temperature to 110°C. However, it decreased suddenly above this temperature. It is thought this is because the buckling of the carbon fibers in the compressive side of the specimen was produced by the lack of supporting force from the softened matrix. The thermal stability of bending strength in the direction of fibers was restricted within the range from room temperature to 80°C. Bending strength decreased rapidly above 80°C because of the compressive buckling failure of the CFRP layers in the compressive side of the specimen. Bending failure strain and plastic deformation perpendicular to the fibers increased as the temperature increased. This means that if the V-bending process is carried out in the high temperature range, the limit of work will be enlarged more than the process at room temperature.
