JOURNAL FREE ACCESSA 4-months-old Japanese black steer with a pulsatile hematoma on the right metatarsus bone was diagnosed as arteriovenous fistura by angiography. The patient showed slight lameness at the affected limb. Auscultation on the hematoma revealed obvious continuous thrill and bruit which is the most characteristic findings of this disease. Around the skin overlying the hematoma, old cicatrization of vulnus by a glass piece at two months of age was observed.
Under the anesthesia, the ligation of metatarsea dorsalis III A, and V. was performed, the hematoma was completely removed, and the casting external fixation was applied. The function of the affected leg was quickly recovered.View full abstractDownload PDF (5588K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSContinuous intravenous infusion of 0.25% ketamine with the premedication of xylazine was applied to various minor surgeries (castration, removal of bone fragments and so on) of 43 horses. Induction of anesthesia was quite smooth and the maintenance during surgery was easy. Furthermore, the recovery was fast without excitement. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSHypothermic anesthesia using ether was applied for 2 dogs with patent ductus arteriosus. The ductus arteriosus was ligated when the esophageal temperature failed to 26°C or 26.8°C, at which time the arterial blood pressure decreased to 55/25 mmHg or 70/50 mmHg and the heart rate decreased to 77 beats/min or 95 beats/min. The decrease in those parameters may enable to perform this surgery more easily. Since one of the cases had been suffering from ventral septal defect with patent ductus arteriosus, plastic surgery for septal defect was tried 2 months after the 1st surgery under ultrahypothermic anesthesia, however the patient died after the surgery.
