Retrospective study was conducted on 30 dogs with portosystemic shunt (PSS) referred to the University of Tokyo, between April 1995 and March 2001. The diagnosis of these patients was confirmed by laparotomy and the data were collected from their medical records. Among 30 patients, 90% were toy or miniature breeds and 80 % had a single extrahepatic shunt. Twenty out of 30 cases underwent attenuation of the shunt vessel either with ligation or by placing an ameroid constrictor (AC) . In 7 dogs receiving shunt vessel ligation, 4 dogs underwent partial ligation because of the increased portal pressure. All total ligation cases showed the good prognosis, but half (two out of four) of partial ligation cases still had mild clinical signs after operation.
On the contrary, most of the cases (n= 13) underwent the placement of AC showed the excellent prognosis except for only one case which developed postligation seizure syndrome.

An 8-year-old female 9 kg pug with bronchoalveolar carcinoma (T2, Nx, M0) and pneumonia underwent pneumonectomy of right lobes except accessory lobe and low dose carboplatin therapy (120 mg/m2, iv, 3-4 week) after surgery during 14 months. This dog survived for 21 months with good quality of life (QOL) after surgery. Though prognosis of lung tumors is generally poor, lobectomy was effective for this case with well-differentiated carcinoma. Low dose carboplatin therapy did not have any objective effects for cancer, but had few side effects in this case.

Authors invented a new skin-fascia suture technique for tensionrelieving in which incised skin edges were closed with towel forceps and the overlying skin was directly sutured to the fascia for tension-relieving, and applied this technique in bilateral mammectomy of canine mammary gland tumors. In this technique, undermining of the skin was minimum and the subcutaneous blood vessels were preserved. Since no ligature threads were subcutaneously left, wound healing was good without formation of granulation tissues, and tumor recurrence would be detected early and easily.
