Effects of fetal pancreatic xenografts treated with direct irradiation of ultraviolet (UV) on the diabetic recipients were examined in vivo and by mixed islets lymphocyte culture (MILC) . Direct UV-irradiation of fetal pancreas prevented the initiation of proliferative responses in xenogenic MILL. The response reduced to 73.4±8.8% (mean±SE) compared with that in non UV-irradiation. Six total pancreatectomized mongrel dogs were used as recipients for feline fetal pancreas transplantation (Tx) . Fetal pancreatic tissues were engrafted into the omentum pouch or the spleen after direct UV-irradiation. The survival after total pancreatectomy was 84.1±14.1 days in xenograft, whereas it was 24.6±6.5 days in the dog without transplantation. Daily inulin requirements, urine glucose levels and daily rate of reduction of body weight were decreased after Tx.

The cardiovascular effects of lateral and dorsal recumbency, and the usefulness of dobutamine infusion in dorsal recumbency in halothane-oxygen-anesthetized normal horses were determined. In dorsal recumbency, horses showed signif cant depression of cardiovascular function including decreased mean arterial blood pressure (less than 60 mmHg), decreased cardiac output (40% of the pre-anesthetic value), and decreased urinary output (less than 1.0 ml/kg/hr) . After infusion of dobutamine at a mean dose of 1.22±0.34 μg/kg/min into dorsal recumbent anesthetized horses, the blood pressure and cardiac output increased to over 70 mmHg and 60% of the pre-anesthetic value, respectively. An intravenous infusion of dobutamine was therefore an effective treatment for cardiovascular depression in horses anesthetized with halothane.

We have experienced a case of ruptured common bile duct in a 9-month old Japanese domestic male cat. The cat was admitted on the 5th day after a traffic accident. Six days after the rupture, a reconstructive surgery of the common bile duct was performed with a favorable result.
Anesthesia was induced by an intravenous injection of 0.25 mg/kg of atropine sulfate and 25 mg/kg of thiopental sodium and maintained with GOI under controlled ventilation.
The Tomcat catheter® as a stent can be used in this case. The tip was cut to a length of about 1 cm. The cut face of the catheter was inserted into the common bile duct of the gallbladder side and sutured with a 6-0 catgut. This prevented the stent from slipping down. The rounded tip of the catheter was inserted into the common bile duct of the duodenal side. This may facilitate the natural passage of bile through the duct. The common bile duct was then simply sutured with a 6-0 Maxon®, and after confirming no leakage of bile, the reconstructive operation was completed. On the first day of postoperation, appetite returned and regression of the jaundice was observed. Healthy condition without any problems was observed after the operation 2 years ago.

Three Japanese chins without obvious clinical manifestation of hepatic failure were diagnosis as cholelithiasis radiographically. Necropsy findings of two patients revealed the presence of cholelithiasis in various sizes within the biliary duct system, which were analysed as carium carbonate. Since there were no common nutritional foctors in these patients, this type of cholelithiasis might predispose in this breed.
