    In the last few years, electronic still cameras have been popular in a photography. The present cameras of this class are called “digital cameras”. Among these digital cameras, compact cameras have stood out recently. More than 10 manufacturers now market digital cameras. We briefly look at the electronic still cameras from a photography.

    This paper presents a method for constructing a surface model automatically from a single sketch image. A sketch image is drawn on a paper based on some rules of design presentation drawing. From the sketch image which is digitized by a scanner, a contour image is got in advance. The process of our presented method consists of the following three stages. Firstly, 2-D vertices are detected from the contour image, and 3-D coordinates of vertices are inferred from 2-D coordinates. Secondly, an adequate wire-frame model is constructed using cubic Bézier curves by moving each inferred vertex to an optimum location. The shape of a wire-frame model is optimized using genetic algorthm so that the projection of the wire-frame model to the image plane coincides with the contour of the sketch image. Finally, a surface model is constructed using bicubic Bézier surfaces by interpolating the wire-frame model.

    An image processing method to extract human facial regions whose positions, sizes and rotational angles are un-known from gray-scale still images is proposed in this paper. In this method, first a facial template is generated from several human facial images. Next, the facial template is magnified, rotated and overlapped with an original image, and the matching ratio between the template and the original image is calculated. Since there are a vast number of combinations for parameters of this transformation, Genetic Algorithm is employed to search quickly a parameter set which gives a good matching ratio. The proposed method can be applied to positioning, recognizing and counting of humans.

  • Effects of Silica Particles on Ink Penetration

    Print quality of ink jet printing is associated with ink penetration which depends on paper structure and rheological properties of ink. Especially, the interaction between paper and ink is an important factor for determining the print quality because the vast majority of ink for ink jet printing in the market are water-based. Excessive ink spreading results in print-through and dot gain. In this study, we investigated ink penetration using two kinds of sample papers. One is silica-coated paper and the other is hand-made paper which is filled by silica slurry. In order to clarify the relation between properties of non-crystalline silica fine particles and penetrating phenomenon into paper, we performed two types of experiments: one is a simulation experiment of ink jet printing using an image processing method and the other is the Bristow method. From experimental results, followings are concluded: size of printed dot for both of silica-coated paper and hand-made paper became small with increasing silica contents and the penetration speed became fast. It is clearly that noncrystalline silica fine particles are capable of absorbing ink and controlling dot gain. Therefore silica particles are useful as additives for the ink jet printing paper.

    This paper gives a systematic scope of the image quality evaluation by means of statistical method. The characteristics of image qualities are discussed under relation with the stochastic properties such as histogram, probability density function, correlation and covariance matrix.

  • Electronic Marking Technology and Printing -Direct Marking and it's Application for Platemaking and Printing-

    Direct marking is a very simple imaging process which can apply for digital color proofing and direct digital platemaking in printing process. High definition image is obtained by using laser thermal transfer, ablation, adhesion and perforation technologies because a laser light beam can be focused to small spot on imaging layer. On the other hand, direct toner marking technologies are developed as a simple imaging process. The motion of toner can be controlled by applied electric field by using several type of electrodes.
