This paper introduces the standardization activdty of CIE for color appearance model. CIECAM97s was adopted as the CIE 1997 interim color appearance model by TC1-34. In the future, CIE expects to develop clear usage guidelines for coomon applications. The work of technical Committees in Div. 1 concerning color management and in Div. 8 are described mainly based on the terms of reference.

The ISO TC42 is a division of the International Standard Organization to discuss and establish the technical standard issues for the photographic field. The actual electronization of photography had started in the beginning of 1980s and the first system named “Electronic still photography”. Later it was changed to “Digital Photography” according to the introduction of the digital imaging technologies. The users of digital photography have spread from the high-end professional photographers to the low-end amateur enthusiasts. Various kinds of equipment and processing systems have appeared on the market. Thus the technical standards for digital photography is very important both for the users and suppliers. This paper introduces the 10 years activities of ISO/TC42 WG18 for the initial Electronic still photography to the current Digital photography.

Ondemand printing was introduced to the market when E-Print was released in 1993. However, there are much more opportunities in ondemand printing by using copy machine based printing system. Further, variable printing can be done using the same machine. This article will introduce such copy machine based printing systems and some of EFl's technologies which will increase printing productivdty.

ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC29/WG1 has been contributing to standardize still image coding methods, so-called JPEG and JBIG families for more than 10 years. Currently, the most exciting standardization project is JPEG2000, which will provide a high coding efficiency and many functions such as lossy to lossless progressive coding, Region Of Interest coding and so on. In this paper, an overview of still image coding standards and trends of related technologies are introduced, putting emphasis on the technologies adopted in JPEG2000.

Many documents, which were mostly written by hand in the past, have come to be printed with various types of word processors for Japanese characters (J-WP). It is becoming important to identify the types of J-WPs based on the characters printed with them in the field of forensic science. In this study, we made investigations on an objective method of inferring the types of J-WPs from printed characters. The method was as follows. Each sample was magnified 50 times with the expansion projection machine and the data obtained through the measurement of 5 printed characters (“hiragana”) on a two-dimensional coordinate system. The obtained data of each sample were used for a calculation in a multivariate analysis (cluster analysis, principal component analysis, and SIMCA). The analytical result showed that the 41 samples could be classified based upon the manufacturers or the types of J-WPs.

Various digital data generated mostly for printing media could be important assets for printing companies when they are stored in the form of date bases. So called “One source, multi-use” method which utilizes one set of digital data for multiple media is becoming more and more important from the company strategy and marketing point of views when it is integrated with various data bases aiming for expansion into other media including printing. On the other hand, there are many obstacles to materialize the method. Reviewing the problems encountered to realize the method, I shall explain data base publishing and multimedia resource system based upon data base.
