Fuji's off-press proof system “Color Art” can easily form sharp patterns of arbitrary shape on any substrates. By applying the “Color Art” to analyze the optical properties of the substrate or printing paper, some interesting results are obtained. We prepared rectangular wave paterns with a series of spatial frequencies on test papers. On the other hand, we made half tone screen patterns on the paper to measure the optical dot gain. The light intensity at a few tens micro-meters or more from the impinging point correlates well with the optical dot gain.

The present paper describes an interpolation method of color images. This method consists of four steps. In the first step, feature regions are extracted from a pair of color key frame images. A regular lattice is put on one of the key frames in the second step. Then, corresponding points to every lattice-points are obtained on the other key frame by deforming the lattice. In the third step, intermediately deformed lattices are made by interpolation of the deformation. In the last step, arbitrary numbers of inbetweening color images are generatad by a texture mapping technique often used in computer graphics. As this method generates natural inbetweening images, it can be applied not only to animation but also to visual communications as a data compression method.

It is most important how to measure the spectral reflectance and transmittance of the image for color image analysis and evaluation. In this paper, the principles of the measurement of color; spectral reflectance, spectral transmittance, Ruther condition, multiband photometry and NCS (Natural Color System) are introduced and the definition of CIE 1976 (L*u*v*), (L*a*b*) spaces is also described.

Composition and editing systems can be categorized into batch-type systems and interactive-type systems. Early systems were mainly batch systems, but the development of computer technology has realized practical interactive systems. While batch systems are suitable for large scale text processing where fixed formats appear repeatedly, interactive systems are suitable for the composition of complex styles which include many figures and images. In the following, TCL and LATEX are introduced as typical examples of batch systems, and IPS and SAIVERT-H are introduced as typical examples of interactive systems.
