The Oral Implant Committee of the Japanese Society of Periodontology has summarized the latest evidence pertaining to the definition of peri-implant disease, risk factors for peri-implantitis, and treatment of peri-implantitis in 2021-2022 and discussed issues for future consideration.
The definition and diagnostic criteria of peri-implant disease are explained based on the 2017 World Workshop Proceedings. In addition, a history of periodontitis, smoking, diabetes, and poor plaque control have been investigated as risk factors for the development of peri-implantitis, but further investigation is necessary to determine if each factor directly increases the risk of development of peri-implantitis. The study also suggested that more detailed investigations are needed to determine whether each of these factors is a direct factor in the development of peri-implantitis.
