With the increase in incidence of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19), university education was forced to change from conventional face-to-face lectures to online lectures using a remote conference system. In periodontal education, various ideas have changed, both about both knowledge education and clinical training. The Education Committee of the Japanese Society of Periodontology (JSP) conducted a survey on the response of each dental university/university dentistry department to COVID-19 and its impact on periodontal education, and received a 100% response rate. In regard to knowledge education in the field of periodontology, web lectures were given instead of face-to-face lectures, but it that was soon changed to live lectures and hybrid lectures because the effect of the education provision was clearly diluted, and alternative methods were needed for model practical training at many universities. Even in clinical training education, clinical practice was restricted and alternative training methods were needed. The JSP supervised the contents, but improvements and additions of the content were requested. Effective periodontal education required incorporation of online education during the COVID-19 pandemic.
