Diversifying the customers′ needs, new manufacturing systems and new manufacturing management methods are proposed. But they are not introduced into the factories in real. Now we are developing ″Design Support System for Manufacturing Systems (DSSMS) ″.Design Support System for Manufacturing Systems consists of four phases. First phase is the definition of the requirements. Second phase is the searching for the combinations of the manufacturing elements. In this paper we discuss that Classified Database for Manufacturing Systems is necessary and important for Phase 1 and Phase 2. And we discuss the methods for the construction of Classified Database for Manufacturing Systems.

In machining of the products in which a large number of cutting tools and machining processes are required, the factors relating to productivity such as machining time, machining cost and power consumption vary by sequence of machining. To develop the supporting system for process design including above factors in machining with machining center, a supporting system using algorithm of shortest path problem was proposed in previous report. In the system, various functions such as prevention of the geometrical interference between the tool and workpiece, prevention of sequence of machining in which previous machining is invalidated and integration of processes performed using a same tool are considered. In this report, by using an algorithm of traveling salesman problem, an analysis of a shortest path for drilling of workpiece with a lot of holes is enabled. From the comparison of analytical result and results designed by machine operator, it is confirmed that the analytical result is valid.

This study proposes the algorithm which reduces the idle time of machining cells and shortens the total processing time including setup time by changing lot size dynamically. Two kinds of lot dividing are introduced: ″parallel processing″ and ″bit-by-bit forwarding″. The former is to assign divided sub-lots to idling cells and the latter is to forward each sub-lot to the next cell after its processing is finished. We propose a method of selection of these two dividing and determination of the size of divided sub-lots to maximize the amount of time shortened.

Presently, the reduction of the life cycle of the products is advanced. As a primary factor, manufactures have listed diversification of customer needs. Therefore, it is necessary to supply quickly the various products to the customers from the manufactures. In this study, we focus on assembly works in the production process and we study human workload for assemblability. As a difference with the former assembly evaluation, we develop a new assembly evaluation by using bioinstrument to measure the workload of the assembly.

A lot of quality improving methods are well known, but not standing by statistical thinking, standing by the induction approach, it is possible to solve quality problems with speedy feeling. The current development and spread of the BAM is reported since the previous paper.

In milling with 5-axis machining center, the attitudes of tool or workpiece are controlled by tilting 2 axes, so the milling can be performed by outer portion of cutting edge having large cutting velocity. In the 1st part of this investigation, geometric quantities such as tool-workpiece contact region, undeformed chip thickness along the cutting edge and area of cutting cross-section in slot milling of a plane for various attitudes of tool were analyzed, and variation of these geometric quantities with tool tilting angle was discussed. Cutting forces under various attitudes were predicted by using a cutting model proposed in previous paper, and relationship among tool tilting angle, above geometric quantities and cutting forces were clarified. In this report, it is found that the appropriate tool tilting angle, which gives small variation of the cutting forces with rotational angle and non-overcut caused by tool deflection for milling with pick-feed, can be obtained.

By using a cutting model and energy method proposed in previous papers, cutting forces in milling processes in which both cutting edges of spherical and cylindrical portions engage with the workpiece can be predicted. In the 2nd part of this investigation, the tool deflection and locus of tool axis during milling were analyzed by using the cutting force data predicted and the FEM model of a ball end mill. Tool deflection and behavior of the tool axis during contour milling of inclined surfaces ware measured by using an eddy-current type sensor and compared with the predicted results. In this report, geometrical configurations of the machined surface and the machining errors obtained through the analysis of tool deflection are shown for various slopes of the inclined surface. It is found that machining errors disagree with the magnitudes of deflection of the tool axis in a plane normal to the feed direction, so the errors can′t be evaluated by neglecting the condition of cutting edge engaged with the workpiece such as rotational angle and tool geometry.

In this research, the surface pattern generated with ball-end milling was analyzed with the spherical approximation of cutter marks. The passage trajectory on machined surface with the cutting edge of ball-end mill was approximated on the spherical surface. The equation of plane was calculated from the overlapping of spherical surfaces and the machined surface, and then the ridge line of surface pattern can be given by the equation of line calculated from the intersection of these planes. From the simulation results of focus attention on the cutter marks in feed direction, it is shown that the width of cutter marks in feed direction increases in proportion to the sine ingredient of tool tilting angle and the eccentricity of tool axis.

In this paper, the cutting performance by a radius end mill for an inclined surface with a contour path method is analyzed. Secondly, chip area is calculated by the interference of the rake surface and the chip volume. The influence of conditions on the behavior of the chip area is shown. Thirdly, the cutting force and surface roughness are measured. And also, the data obtained by calculations and experiments compared with the results by that of ball end mill and considered cutting performance of both tools.

When machining surface texture, the machining time and accuracy are decided by the diameter of the ball end mill used. In this study, the tool diameter was calculated based on the curvature of the shape data of the texture. Because the curvature of surface texture differs by location, the machining time increases when machining using only small tool diameters. We therefore proposed the method of gradually changing the tool diameter by dividing the machining area into machinable and non-machinable areas, which resulted in reduced machining time. The machining surface was also evaluated in this study.

The objective of this research is to support the small-batch size fabrication of the low-rigidity parts. Because the workpiece deformation is a dominant error source in endmilling of low-rigidity parts, it is necessary to fix workpieces appropriately. The estimation of actual workpiece deformation enables to evaluate the fixturing operation which is sometimes executed manually. In this paper, an on-machine estimation method of workpiece deformation in fixturing operation is proposed based on a sensor-configured simulation framework. The framework is constructed to estimate the actual workpiece deformation by combining locally measured strain and Finite Element Method (FEM) based simulation. In order utilize the framework, variation modeling of fixturing process is indispensable. Therefore a variational model of fixturing process for low-rigidity parts is introduced. Then, a developed prototype system is explained as a basic implementation of on-machine estimation. Results of a example by the developed system is shown to evaluate the proposed method.

With high-performance digital cameras and measuring instruments, the demand for high-precision optical glass lenses is increasing. Molded lenses are the mainstream of optical glass lens today. The perform glass before molding requires precise machining for improvement in the form accuracy and the surface roughness. In this research, we investigated the base grinding parameters of optical glasses for precision molding with a view to reduction of polishing time of perform glasses.
