In polishing of aspherical lens shape or a large diameter reflecting mirror such as astronomicalobservatory, 'a small tool' is used, which is smaller than the workpiece.Since small tools have low polishing efficiency, we propose a novel polishing method that leada to enhanced removal rate using AC electric field.In this paper, we describe the results for the basical polishing test for silicone wafer with the small tool using the slurry controlled by AC electric field.

In this study, we proposed a graded structure with conical holes to reduce the stress shielding effect generated between a metal implant and a living bone. The designed structure was fabricated by 3D metal additive manufacturing. Then, the correlation between the arrangement of holes and the reproducibility of shape or the mechanical properties was verified. As a result of observation with a scanning electron microscope and the three point bending test, it was found that as the porosity increased, the reproducibility of shape deteriorated and the elastic modulus and the maximum bending stress decreased.

It sometimes happens that side of laser sintered parts is achieved a poor surface finish called ″orange peel″, which is unintentional bumpy texture. This paper reports that the quality of surface finish was caused by semi-sintered powder sticking on the side of laser sintered parts. It was found that the formation of bumpy structure on the side depended on whether un-melt powder stick to the side or not. In order to control semi-sintered powder sticking on the side, additional low-power laser drawing was operated around the specimen layer by layer. As result, frequency of a good surface finish, which range of Sa is under 20 micrometer increased compared to non-additional laser drawing.

Injection molded direct joining (IMDJ) is one of the metal-polymer direct joining methods, which is based on metal surface treatment and insert injection molding. In this research, we apply electrolyte jet machining (EJM), to the surface treatment process. EJM is carried out by jetting electrolytic aqueous solution from a nozzle towards a workpiece while a voltage is applied between the nozzle and the workpiece. As metal removal occurs in this process according to electrolytic reactions, micro/nano structures will be formed on surface of the workpiece. In this work, we have developed an EJM apparatus that can process metal pieces and verified the application of EJM to metal-polymer direct joining. We also studied the effects of current density of EJM experiments on average shear strength of metal-polymer joining.

Progress in additive manufacturing (AM) for metal materials is strongly demanded in aerospace and automobile industries because of its applicability to a low-waste and high-efficient production for complex-shape parts. However, AMs still have several challenges for practical usage such as void evolution inside of the produced object. This study clarifies deposition conditions capable of void suppression in Directed Energy Deposition which is one of the AM methods. Furthermore, a void reduction method is also proposed, which eliminates voids in the produced object by remelting treatment with laser beam.

A system of systems (SoS) is a heterogeneous, autonomous and complex systems. This paper aims at proposing a new framework of SoS design. First, this research discusses the complex situations of SoS, and addresses the three issues of SoS design: 1) nonlinearity and discontinuity of design space, 2) emergence behavior, and 3) high uncertainty. The framework adopts a scenario design method, a multi-agent simulation method, and a robust design method to solve these issues, and integrates them in a sophisticated manner. A case study of designing subsidy polices for a distributed generation system, which is a typical SoS, is demonstrated.
