The objective of this study is to develop a turning-burnishing process which can obtain a burnished surface with low roughness even if feed rate in burnishing is raised by making the nose radius variable in burnishing utilizing flank face. As a preparation stage, experiments were conducted using inserts with different nose radius in turning and burnishing, and the effect of nose radius and feed rate in burnishing on burnished surface was investigated. In this research, SCM 440 solid round bar of alloy steel was selected as the workpiece. Turning and burnishing were performed on hardened material and unhardened material. Inserts of non-coated cermet is used, and the nose radius R = 0.8 mm in turning. Nose radius in burnishing was changed at 4 levels: R = 1.2, 1.6, 2.0, 2.4 mm, and for each nose radius, feed rate in burnishing was changed at 5 levels: fb = 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, 0.1, 0.125 mm/rev. As a result, when feed rate in burnishing was fb = 0.125 mm / rev., there was a tendency for roughness to decrease by increasing the nose radius.

Direct laser machining in sub-micron scale patterning on working surface with a large scale remains a challenging task though the laser machining has been widely applied in various application. A photonic nanojet becomes a promising way to solve the problem by involving near-field focusing of light waves below the surface of a dielectric microsphere to fabricate pattern in micro- and nanometer size. In this study, liquid is proposed as photonic nanojet machining medium due to several advantages that liquid offer during machining process. By generating laser power to the microsphere and controlling the resulting photonic nanojet intensity and position related to the workpiece, intended ablation size on the material could be controlled at sub-micrometer scale. An experiment of in-liquid nanomachining processing by generating photonic nanojet is then be a subject to study while comparing the result from our numerical simulation for confirmation.

F82H steel is one of the wall materials for prototype fusion reactor. Plasma-wall interaction is a major problem for characteristic of the fusion reactor, and its understanding will be followed by surface diagnostic of the wall. In-situ method for the surface compositional analysis without air exposure will be needed, and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is one of the major candidates. The LIBS is remote sensing technique, easy to perform, good for depth profile resolution, and able to done in short measuring time. Objective of this research is to confirm an availability of LIBS with 355nm laser pulse for F82H steel.

In recent years, the idea of Sustainable development has been regarded as emphasizing from the seriousness of global environmental problems. In this background, miniaturization and weight reduction of mechanical devices are proceeding. Focusing on the concept of 'small ones are small machines', it can be considered that it is possible to realize product manufacturing with reduced environmental load at the product manufacturing stage by using a processing machine commensurate with the dimensions of the workpiece. Therefore, in this research, we discuss the effects of chatter vibration during machining on machining accuracy.
