Conductive silver image was directly obtained by IR-laser irradiation upon Ag2O coated layer which contained polyvinyl alcohol. Unirradiated Ag2O is removed by the treatment with dilute nitric acid. During the laser irradiation, Ag2O particles melted and were transformed to porous image. Edge shapes of fine lines are smooth and don't have the indentation. We can draw 30μm line widths as finest line. The resolution of the image was determined by the size of Ag2O particles. Over irradiation of high energy of laser caused the undesirable ablation. Volume resistivity of silver thin line is as low as around 10-5Ωcm. This value is low enough, and further metal plating is not necessary for practical usage.

A dye sublimation thermal transfer printing provides quality of image comparable to silver halide photograph. The feature of the printing is continuous density gradation, however, characteristic of the gradation in highlight area deteriorates by deviation of characteristics of the sublimation process. As a result, degradation of image quality such as tone jump and color saturation occurs in highlight area.
This paper describes highlight error diffusion technique improving the tonal rendition in the highlight area and also micro density stabilization algorithm realizing it in the sublimation process. The micro stabilization algorithm controls injection of thermal quantity to a pixel under consideration of average density in surrounding pixels.
The proposed techniques improve continuous tone characteristics in highlight area without visually recognizable granularity.

We have applied Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to fuser thermal design and the included adiabatic technology. We have investigated the energy saving effect and the restraint effect for a rise in temperature of the metal reflector by a simple model and a fine model. These effects are the application of radiation shields. By applying a high accuracy radiation model to simple analysis models, we can relatively estimate a design plan. Especially in CFD, it is useful to quantitatively get a heat transfer rate. The energy saving effect by simple analysis models correlates well with experimental results. However, we cannot accurately calculate the temperature field by simple models. The radiation should be considered to be in the neighborhood of the fuser.

Authors analyzed the flocculation process of the dispersed colorant particles in the stilled liquid toner (the internal flow is very slow) within the capillary that is formed between a photoconductor and a noncontact squeegee roller. The phenomena were simulated in the fluidic field where the advective diffusion dominates, under the boundary condition of the meniscus (air-liquid interface) from where the dispersion liquid evaporates. The result shows that the flocculation arises at the edges of meniscus about 16 hours later from the initial state, on the case of an ordinary dispersion liquid and a usual environmental condition. And it also shows that the flocculation is accelerated so sharply with increasing the initial concentration or rising temperature. These analyzing method and derived characteristics will be useful to designing the machine to apply the dispersing liquid with capillary.

On-Demand Print, POD, is not defined by the products' category, but is defined as a type of service to provide the print products on an as-needed basis. It is possible to provide this service using the standard existing presses.
What about technology? HP and XEIKON are the major manufacturers of full color no-plate digital printers. Xerox, Konica Minolta and Kodak newly entered into the market.
What about the market? I used to forecast that the POD market grows 50% every year. Recently, it slows down to 40% growth. However, this rate is still higher than the U.S.A's growth rate of 20%, and the Europe's 21%. The market size this year is about 97.4billion yen. It will be 270 billion yen in 2007. A huge market is expected to appear. The suppliers to this market will be categorized as Print shops, Plate making companies, Printing companies and in-house printing sections.

Accompanied by the extent of digital printing, so far it has been about that spread of digital printing probably will start even in field of large quantity high-speed printing where conventional system is the centre. At our company in order to answer the above mentioned flow, the new basis of the high-speed large quantity variable digital printer has been developed. It is Océ VarioStream 9000 series announced in February 2004.
The VarioStream 9000 series adopts both sides simultaneous printing and fixation mechanism. It is equipped with two engines that produce 800 A4 pages in a minute (2up duplex).
First model of the VarioStream 9000 series is VarioStream 9210 for monochrome printing, but it provides already the expandability for the future. The system is designed already making provision for future polychromatic extension, for example the model 9220 can print in 2 colours on both side of media. We are advancing the correspondence of basic colour and are planning to release consecutively three colours, four colours, process colour and process colour + highlight colour feature. The basic system for monochrome can upgrade at customer site.

All printing technologies, including electro photography, offset ink, ink jet, silver halid, etc., are now consolidated to “the printing solutions for digital contents”. All barriers in between those technologies and industries have been removed through the process that all contents become digitalized.
Now, the new market has born
    — using all possible technologies to respond customers' needs
    — no stop inline production from contents distribution to book making
    — work flow proposal with new value added
This document aims at the explanation of the workflow solution and third generation color technologies for on demand distributed printing.
