In this study, the mechanism of drying shrinkage and water loss of concrete with inferior quality recycled coarse aggregates was discussed from the view point of composite theory. The results are summarized as follows : (1) The drying shrinkage of recycled aggregate concrete increases because of the recycled aggregates with low Young's modulus and large drying shrinkage, and this phenomenon is theoretically explained with a composite model for drying shrinkage. (2) In case of natural aggregate concrete, the most of water loss is from cement paste. On the other hand, in case of recycled aggregate concrete, recycled aggregates also lose water. (3) Although the recycled aggregates lose much water at the early stage of drying, the contribution of the lost water to drying shrinkage is small. After that the water loss from the recycled aggregate pores contributes to drying shrinkage.

The composite law of the drying shrinkage by "Capillary Tension Model on Self-Consistent Approximation" is applied to cementitious materials produced by extrusion moulding. The relationships between drying shrinkage and their water cement ratio of cementitious matrices are conducted from the experimental results of moisture and dry repetitions by means of an inverse analysis method. Various types of past composite laws are examined regarding about the drying shrinkage strain of cementitious composite materials produced by extrusion moulding. Comparison of the predictive and experimental values showed a good agreement only in the case of applying the approximation method. Therefore, it is possible to predict drying shrinkage strain of standard cementitious composite materials produced by extrusion moulding with various mix proportions.

It has been pointed out that phthalic esters have possibility to be endocrine disrupters. In addition to possibility of endocrine disrupters, the indoor air concentration values for dibutyl phthalate (DBF) and dioctyl phthalate (DOP) should be controlled to be less than 220x10^<-6>g/m^3 and 120x10^<-6>g/m^3, respectively, according to the guideline proposed by Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. However, there are few available data on the emission rates of the phthalic esters from building materials. In this context, the phthalic esters emitted from wall papers and floor covering sheets made of polyvinyl chloride resin were quantitatively analyzed. The emission at 40℃ was too low to detect the phthalic esters. The emission rates of DOP and di-isononyl phthalate (DINP) from wall papers and floor covering sheets could be measured at 80℃. These data at 80℃ were converted to be from 1.4x10^<-6>g/(m^2・hour) to 5.3x10^<-6>g/(m^2・hour) at 28℃ by consulting with the literature. It is considered that there is little possibility to exceed the indoor air concentration values proposed by the Ministry with the estimated emission rates under normal conditions.

The effect of curvature radius at the substrate comers was studied in order to increase the fatigue resistance of sealants at intersections. At first, we investigated curvature radii at intersections of sealed joints in actual buildings. It was obvious that there were a lot of joints with small curvature radii. Then, a fatigue test based on curtain wall motion was carried out to evaluate the effect of the curvature radii at the corner of substrate. The measurements show a higher fatigue resistance of the sealants can be obtained by increasing the curvature radius of the comers. A graph showing these results was given to enable optimum design of sealed joints and the recommended range of curvature radius was determined quantitatively.

Strength of concrete in actual structures is often judged lower than that used for structural design. It is considered to occur due to the illegal addition of water during casting procedure, insufficient compaction during construction, deterioration due to aging and severe atmosphere, etc. Such low strength concrete does not make harmful effect to a performance of structure as long as it is subjected to only service loads. Performance of structures in severe condition e.g. in large earthquakes, however, is easily predicted to be greatly affected by the strength of concrete. In the present study, a series of nondestructive tests has been carried out for finding the low strength and therefore low quality concrete in site. Testing items include scratched width by a steel nail, rebound number by a test hammer, ultrasonic velocity, etc. As a result, low quality concrete in structure may be found out rather easily by using such nondestructive testing methods. It is also pointed out that the scratching test is quite effective and easily handled considering the work in site.

Effects of movement and temperature on fatigue resistance of crack zone in concrete members repaired by injecting epoxy resin was experimentally studied. First, a fatigue machine that produces small movement similar to those observed in actual cracks was developed. The fatigue tests were carried out at several amplitudes of movement and at several temperatures. It was made clear that an increase of amplitude and temperature reduced erformance on fatigue, particularly the rise of temperature changes a mode of fracture at the repaired zone and sharply dropped fatigue resistance. Finally, the design method for durable cracking repair was proposed on the basis of the above results.

This paper presents the experimental result on various factors and prediction equation for slump flow velocity(Fv) of selfcompacting concrete using viscosity-agent. In this experiment, water-binder ratio, volume percentage of fine aggregate in mortar and absolute volume of coarse aggregate are changed in mix proportion of concrete, and the slump flow velocity of fresh concrete are measured. We found that the yield value(τ_m), the plastic viscosity(η_m) in wet screening mortar and the absolute volume of coarse aggregate (V_G) affect the slump flow velocity. The prediction equation is proposed the formula Fv (τ_m, η_m, V_G).

The wind flows around a three-dimensional slender cylinder model and the wind pressures acting on it were measured synchronously by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and simultaneous multi-pressure measurements. Symmetrical mean flow distributions were obtained from piles of instantaneous flow distributions. The relations between the separated shear layers and the wind pressures on the side of the model were shown by synchronous records between instantaneous flows and wind pressures. The correlations between the perpendicular components (V components) of the flow around the model and the lift forces on it were highest. The correlation on the centerline in the wake also had spatial periodic fluctuations like a sine wave. It can be considered that the spatial periodic fluctuations in the correlation were caused by the vortex shedding from the model, because of a high relationship between the spatial period of the fluctuations and the reciprocal Strouhal number.

This paper describes the result of a shaking table test on high-aspect-ratio models of base-isolated buildings. We confirmed the influence of shear displacement upon axial stiffness in the test. Through our investigation of the development of a large axial force caused in connection with horizontal, vertical, and rocking vibrations, we found that careful attention to the influence of vertical vibration on the development of a large axial force is required. We developed a method for predicting additional axial forces produced by vertical vibrations. Predictions by this method were in good agreement with experimental results, confirming the validity of the method.

In thermal recycle system, industrial abandoned plastics are crushed and burned as alternative fuel of coal and/or petroleum. In order to obtain basic data to assess the environmental vibration from the crush machine in newly planning recycle facilities, we measured environmental vibration of facilities in operation, and vibration exciting force of crush machine was evaluated. Thus obtained exciting force has large fluctuation depending on crushed material. robabilistic/Statistic theory is applied for the exciting force data and exciting force level is determined according non- exceeding probability and evaluation period. This exciting force level is applied in the assessment of the environmental vibration from the crush machine in newly planning recycle facilities.

This paper presents a unique methodology of monitoring the reduction in story stiflhess of a building integrating a filtering technique. In the proposed methodology, identification is conducted based on the subsystem representing the behavior of specific story. The natural frequencies identified with respect to these subsystems give useful information for evaluating the story stiflhess. In estimating such a natural frequency of the subsystem, the subspace identification technique is utilized along with the measurement of only the right upper and lower stories' absolute accelerations. The validity of the proposed methodology is demonstrated by conducting computer simulations and scale-model experiments.

The investigation was made to estimate the settlement, the stress and the allowable stress of the multi-layered ground. For the immediate settlement of the foundation, the generalization of Barber's method was proposed in order to incorporate the stiffness of soils into the deformation of the ground. For this purpose, the first proposal was the method where the equivalent elastic modulus is used. The second proposition was the method to employ the equivalent thickness. It was found that the proposed models describe properly the characteristics of the immediate settlement for the multi-layered ground. An analytical method to calculate the vertical stress was propounded for the multi-layered ground in taking account of the equivalent thickness. The allowable stress of the multi-layered ground was investigated in considering both the allowable value for the immediate settlement and that for the consolidation settlement.

When the soil-structure system is subjected to the strong ground motions, the soil tends to show severe nonlinearity. In such case, the behavior of the soil-structure systems cannot be predicted by the linear theory. At present, it is necessary to elucidate the nonlinear Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI) effects in seismic design of strucures. In this study, the nonlinear SSI effects between the structures with embedment and the ground with nonlinear characteristics were studied based on the 2-dimensional FEM analyses. The emphases were placed on the following points. 1. To elucidate the dynamic nonlinear SSI effects on the structures with embedment. 2. To propose the simple evaluation method of nonlinear SSI effects. 3. To validate the SSI evaluation method proposed in The Calculation Method of Response and Limit Strength.

In this study, the author works out theoretical analysis of cross sectional stress interaction between H-steel pillars and composite wall (H-steel with RC basement wall) of a soil cement earth retaining structure, during the course of Sakauchi construction. His purpose is to clarify the influence of RC basement wall, which will later collaborate with H-steel pillars, in association with the progress of excavation. From the study, it was found out that the cross sectional stress distribution in the composite wall becomes discontinuous across the boundary of H-steel to basement wall, and the stress in the part of H-steel will differ greatly from that calculated ignoring the basement wall.

Beam string system is often used in spatial structures. High strength strings are taken to stiffen the beam through struts so that the beam can be slender. The lateral unstable rotation of struts is possible to occur when the beam deforms under vertical loads such as those caused by snow if struts are pin jointed to the beam. The beam string system will collapse if the unstable rotation happens. In practical design, by using rigid joints in connections between struts and the beam, or by using two struts to get one V-shaped stable strut, the unstable rotation can be prevented. In this paper, struts are stabilized by lateral bracings, which are connected at bottoms of struts and fixed at another ends. Equilibrium equation is formulated for calculating the minimum stiffness of bracings needed for stabilizing struts. The number of struts, the ratio of strut's length to span, and the lateral bending stiffness of the beam are taken as parameters in case studies. In the end, the results obtained from the proposed analytical method are verified by carrying out geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis.

This paper discusses elasto-plastic buckling behavior of axially compressed cylindrical latticed shells with orthogonal anithotropy. For the cylindrical latticed shells investigated, characteristics of diagonal members and those of horizontal members are different each other. The discussion, based on continuum analogy and finite element analysis, focuses mainly on the effects due to the variation in stiffness of diagonal members on the buckling behavior, followed by an evaluation for an elasto-plastic buckling strength of the cylindrical latticed shells. As a result, it is confirmed that the variation of stiffness in diagonal members affects strongly the elasto-plastic buckling behavior, and, the evaluation, based on a generalized slenderness of a horizontal member, of an elasto-plastic buckling strength of the cylindrical latticed shells is proved to be applicable to member design.

Flat rectangular sandwich-type panels were tested in edgewise compression and under four points bending. The sandwich consisted of CFRP faces with latticed GFRP ribs and a phenol or an urethane foam core. First, local buckling (wrinkling) of the faces occurred in the experiments. The results of the experiments were summarized for buckling stress and buckling wavelength. Second, the local buckling stress for the sandwich panels with latticed ribs were obtained from the general theory of the stationary for the total potential energy. The obtained formulae show that the ribs and the core remarkably resist the local buckling of the face. Consequently the agreements between the theories and the experiments for buckling stress and buckling wavelength are discussed.

The seismic performance of traditional wooden buildings was surveyed quantitatively. A case study was made on the damage in KAMAKURA by 1923 Kanto Earthquake. Through the survey the following conclusions on the types of buildings, which were damaged were determined ; -1) roof materials, the heavier materials such as thatched roof or tiled roof caused heavy damage, 2) buildings with higher wall ratio suffered lesser damage 3) no evident tendency was found, concerning the age of the building, 4) a correlation between the damage ratio of wooden houses and the damage ratio of shrines and temples was found, 5) heavier damage of wooden buildings situated on thicker the alluviual soil was observed.

In this study, a method for calculating the ultimate shear strength of reinforced concrete (RC) beams using various light-weight aggregates was suggested oh the basis of the design guidelines for earthquake resistant concrete buildings based on ultimate strength concept. In this methodology, the brittle degree coefficient of light-weight concrete was regarded as the important material characteristics in high correlation with compressive strength of concrete partitioned into strips by cracking, and the brittle degree coefficient was mutually related with the effective factor, v of compressive strength in the arch mechanism, which was derived by means of the inverse analysis from the present experimental results on the ultimate shear strength of RC beams without shear reinforcement. As a result, it was shown that this method gives reasonable agreement with the experiments on the ultimate shear strength of RC beams using various light-weight concretes.

The objective of this paper is to study the shear softening characteristics of plain concrete elements in strain localized area. A mechanical model for the macroscopic shear failure is developed, focusing on the entire load-displacement relation. The method makes use of rotating smeared crack model and truss model, combined in a simple model. The analysis employs the development of multiple diagonal cracks and macroscopic fictitious shear crack propagation. The model is found in good agreement with experiments. The analytical results point out that the shear softening behavior strongly depends on the size of strain localized area.

This study is intended to grasp general nature of column collapse. Half-scale model specimens with shear or flexure-shear failure modes simulating RC columns designed by the old code were tested until they came to be unable to sustain axial load. Test variables were longitudinal reinforcement, axial load and transverse reinforcement. Using results from this test and past tests, the general nature of column collapse, especially lateral drift associated with collapse is discussed. Some structural indices that are considered to govern the amplitude of collapse drift are also discussed.

There has been a concern on fracture from weld zones between interior diaphragms and a built-up box column at a beam-column connection. The concern may become increased when high heat input welding such as electro-slag welding is employed. From this background, detailed 3D finite element analyses were conducted to study the fracture toughness requirements. The toughness demands were quantified in terms of inelastic crack tip opening displacement (CTOD). It was shown through the analyses that the CTOD was larger for weak-beam cases than for week-panel cases, and the CTOD increase in week-beam cases was associated with outside-ward deformation of the column plate. In addition, a parametric study showed that the CTOD was significantly influenced by the thickness of column plate, the beam web thickness, the beam height, the existence of weld access hole at the beam end, the size of electro-slag weld zone, etc.

The objective of this paper is to develop a spring model at a simple column-beam joint in steel structures to identify the deformation characteristics of the framing system. The joint is achieved by means of filling steel fiber reinforced cementitious composites at the gap. A mechanical model for the macroscopic shear failure of concrete deep beams is applied to the joint-configuration. Based on the numerical simulation by the mechanical model, a simple formula for the spring stiffness is derived and applied to the structural experiments under cyclic loading. It is concluded that the prediction with the formula gives a good agreement with the deformation characteristics observed in the experiments.

In this paper, we proposed a new seismic hinge, which was applied to the beam end regions of steel moment resisting frame structures. The hinge consists of a narrow vertical slot which cuts the beam bottom flange, the bolted frictional slippage damper which connects the beam bottom flange cut, and the inclined stiffeners which transfer the beam shear force beyond the vertical slot. It is planned that the frame which has the hinge mechanism does not produce the large plastic deformation at the beam end region, but resists against seismic action with the frictional slipping behavior of the bolted dampers. This paper presents the result of the static and dynamic loading tests on the wide flange steel beams with the bolted frictional slippage damper. The beams with the proposed hinge mechanism behaved with the perfect elasto-plastic type of the load deformation response as planned during the loading.

In this paper, ductility capacity of composite beams is discussed. First, the results of cyclic loading tests with 4 full-scale composite beam specimens are shown. Each specimen was designed to have different joint efficiency at their beam-to-column connection. The tests results shows that the ductility capacity of the composite beam decreases as then- joint efficiency degrades. Especially, the ductility capacity of the specimens using RHS columns was poor. Experimental data of the neutral axis Next, the evaluation method of ductility capacity of composite beams is derived from experimental knowledge obtained here. Finally, the evaluation is verified with the experimental results. The evaluation follows the tendency of the experimental results, and this indicates that the proposed method is effective in examining ductility capacity of composite beams.

In wide-flange steel shapes, concentrated flange force possibly causes the local failure originated from local web yielding, local flange bending and so on. This paper presents new formulae of local web yielding strength. The yield line theory is applied to obtain the strength considering the collapse mechanism where the yield lines form in the flange and the yield fields, in the web and flange. The proposed formulae include the sizes of the flange width and thickness which are not considered in the formula generally used in practice. The test results of the plate-to-wide-flange steel connections show good agreement with the results of strength estimation. The measured residual flange deformation confirms the validity of the collapse mechanism considered.

This paper examines the slip behavior of the friction type high strength bolted connections with base plate and splice plate material plasticity by monotonic loading. The loading experiment which made the number of bolts, base plate thickness, splice plate thickness and stress slope is conducted. As a result, it was clarified the influence to slip behavior of splice plate plasticity and stress slope. The decrease of bolt axial force under base or splice plate plasticity depends on base or splice plate existence stress. And the simply model for the decrease of bolt axial force and base plate existence stress are made by experimental results and analyses. The strength of joints presumed using this model.

The purpuse of this study is to derive the expression to evaluate a elastic buckling strength of palte under bending shear and axial force. The evaluation of buckling strength of this plate has been perfomed by considering this plate as the plate under equal-bending, pure shear and compression stress. However, in the plate under bending shear and axial force, bending won't become equal-bending. Moreover, the present evaluation method is not enough in the point to separate bending stress and shear stress. Because, in the plate under bending shear and axial force, bending stress and shear stress are mutually in the relation of not independence but inseparability. In this paper, dynamic loading tests were conducted using the bolted frictional slippage connection specimens that sandwiched aluminum alloy sliding plates in order to investigate frictional slipping behavior such as the variation of slip coefficient while slipping and the influence of the initial bolt tension to the kinetic slip coefficient. As the result, specimens using high strength aluminum alloy sliding plates showed stable enough frictional slipping behavior rather than other two aluminum alloy sliding plates and the initial bolt tension had little influence on the slipping coefficient. In addition, in order to predict the slip coefficient of the specimen, a nonlinear regression equation was applied and its regression coefficients were obtained using nonlinear least squares fitting. This equitation predicted varying slip coefficient of specimens using high strength aluminum alloy approximately.

The authors propose a new base isolation system in which a horizontal nylon-ring shock absorber diminishes seismic impact generated in a base-isolated house by restricting the horizontal displacement of the system. Seismic experiments with a base-isolated house of real size showed that althrough the absorber slightly increased the acceleration of the base-isolated house during impact, it did not damage the house at all. The authors also simulated the earthquake response of the new system with a simple dynamic model.
