Effectiveness of construction methods with precast concrete in recent high-rise RC buildings was evaluated by comparison with buildings in 1980-1990's. The following conclusions were obtained as results of the analysis. 1) It was confirmed that the adoption of precast concrete made big contribution to global environment. 2) It was confirmed that the amount of the labor and the term of works could be reduced by using precast concrete members. 3) When the specified strength of concrete exceeded 80MPa, using precast members made reduction of the construction costs. 4) Using different strengths of concrete in the same floor, which was seen in the recent high-rise RC buildings, brought longer term of works.

It is well known through extensively performed experimental investigations that porous concrete can be utilized as an environmentally friendly material. However, distribution characteristics of strength and void ratio of porous concrete have not enoughly investigated, while distribution of the strength of plain concrete is clarified practically to a certain extent. Main purpose of the present study is to make clear the distribution of compressive strength and void ratio of porous concrete. Void ratio tests and compression tests with a large number of porous concrete samples have been conducted. The experimental variables have been as follows: water-cement ratio, flow value of binder paste, void ratio, and vibration time of compaction. As a result, followings have been found, i) Variation compressive strength-void ratio relation of porous concrete may be regarded as a normal distribution, ii) Coefficient of variation may be estimated 10% for porous concrete.

The purpose of this paper is to study conditions in which the 91st-day strength of structural concrete exceeds that of standard curing specimens. Tests investigated strength development when specimens made with low-heat portland cement and a binder containing silica fume were subjected to model temperature profiles. As a result, it was confirmed that there is a tendency for the strength of structural concrete to exceed that of standard curing specimens when concrete with a water-binder ratio of 17% or less is heated to 60℃ in the initial stages of the setting period.

Little information is available about the long-term durability of reinforced concrete with construction joint. For this reason, the objective of this study is to investigate the influence of joint treatment on the corrosion of steel using reinforced concrete specimens exposed in the marine environment for 25 years. As a result, the corrosion protection of steel bar in concrete with various types of joint treatment in marine environments (tidal zone, atmospheric zone, submerged zone) could be investigated. Besides, the state of corrosion in the steel bar varied depending on the environmental condition and the period of exposure.

It is necessary to solve the problem of a level difference on floors from the viewpoint where it walks safely and comfortably in buildings. The one step stair and the slope are general methods of solving a level difference greatly not large. In this research, physiological loads in the one step stairs and the slopes were compared. The results are as follows. ・The one step stairs and the slopes to give an equivalent physiological load, by the same height difference, exist in the range of level difference of 25cm or less. ・When it is examined that the height of the one step stairs and the slopes length, physically handicapped passengers abilities should be assumed to be the main index.

In this paper, the effect of geometric properties of building facade elements on the visual evaluation was investigated. By the data of observation on the actual state of recent building facades which were designed by worldwide famous architects, the rhombic pattern was selected in this study as an important elements affecting the building impression. The factors influencing the visual evaluation of rhombic patterns such as dimension and rhombic pattern edge angle of element were analyzed by performing the sensory test using the simulated specimen. As the results of the sensory tests, the rhombic patterns which has medium edge angle and medium dimension of element tends to obtain relatively good evaluation.

In this paper, we propose an effective energy input to a structure considering soil-structure interaction, by applying the energy balance theory. Evaluated energy input to a structure of a soil-structure coupled model compared with a base-fixed model can be expressed by an aspect ratio and a period of structure and an S-wave velocity of soil. And it was examined how to evaluate the energy input to the structure for the structural design, from the view of the performance of buildings against seismic loads (ex. load-carrying capacity, ductility capacity).

Aero-eplasto-plastic behavior of a 2D square cylinder affected by motion-induced wind forces and dynamic property has been clarified by CFD. The aim of this CFD study is to obtain a change of aero-elasto-plastic characteristics due to three degrees of freedom for dynamic system (along-wind, across-wind and torsional vibrations). Obtained results are as follows; 1) In spite of the existence of hysteretic damping, the response in case of small value of the yield displacement ratio (β_m) is larger than the elastic response at lower wind velocity than the resonant velocity defined by the elastic condition. Because the natural frequency much decreases in plastic case, so the resonance occurs at the lower velocity. 2) In the case of coupled vibrations, the elasto-plastic response remarkably increases more than the one-degree-of-freedom case.

This paper presents the performance based parameter analysis of base isolated building with non-linear viscous damper under Tokachioki type (2003) and Niigata-ken Chuuetsu type (2004) random earthquake excitations. From the three viewpoints of seismic reliability, preservation of seismic safety and improvement of structural comfort, the optimum parameter on the base isolation interface is determined in such a way that the responses of base isolated structural system with linked damper agree with the response demanded by the structural designer. The optimality of the parameter is discussed for the performance demanded coefficient, some random earthquake excitation models, the fundamental period of base isolated building and the non-stationary random response.

We investigated the 2004 Niigata-Chuetsu earthquake, where we have both strong ground motion records and building damage data, examining correlation between various indices of seismic destructive power and building damage. We confirmed that the average elastic velocity response in the period range of 1 to 2s with a damping factor of 0.05 which one of the authors proposed as an optimum destructive power index of strong ground motion for predicting building damage has close correlation with actual damage to buildings also in the case of the 2004 Niigata-Chuetsu earthquake. The period range is based on the equivalent periods that are calculated for buildings with typical elastic periods considering inelastic elongation. A vulnerability function of wooden houses for same seismic intensity in the case of the 2004 Niigata-Chuetsu earthquake was smaller compared to that in the case of previous earthquake, such as the 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu earthquake.

Envelope models of acceleration ground motions (> 1Hz) for moderate earthquakes caused by subducting Philippine Sea plate are proposed to predict ground motions for big earthquakes by stochastic Green's function method. The envelope shapes for source and path are modeled based on Boore's model and the multiple forward scattering theory, respectively. The duration of the envelope model for path is proportional to 1.85 to 2 power of hypocentral distance and nearly independent to frequency. The randomness of the media in the Tokai and Tonankai region is smaller than that in the Huganada region and so the duration for earthquakes in the Tokai and Tonankai region is shorter than that in the Huganada region.

In this paper, an element of vibration control system is discussed, that is inertial mass between ordinary mass points and has kinetic energy proportional to the square of the relative velocity between the mass points. Utilizing this element for response control of multi-degree system against earthquake, natural period of structure can be changed without changing its eigen vectors. Participation vectors of higher modes can be made 0. Especially, the combination of this element can be evaluated easily, that makes all participation vectors of higher modes except the 1st mode 0. In this way, a structure can be realized, that dose not have response of higher modes, and whose response shear coefficients of all stories are the same.

In this paper, model experiment for screw pile with single helical wing is described. The experiment was performed in order to discuss behavior of the bearing capacity of the wing, the pile tip and the pile surface friction in penetration stage and in vertical loading stage. Particularly, in the penetration stage, the wing works as a device, which drives the pile body and facilitates the penetration by reducing restrain pressure in the pile tip area. In the vertical loading stage, the wing works as a part of bearing device and contributes to increase of the pile tip bearing capacity by increment of the restrain pressure in the pile tip area.

The paper focuses on the joints in traditional timber structure. These joints influences strength of buildings, to require sufficient performance. Combined bending, shear, compressive failure of the peg within the joint. At the same time to arise the deformed shape all members of this joint. The failure model is similar to that of the bolt for double shear connections. We have been using the called European yield Theory (EYT) for estimating yield load of single dowel joints with timber side members. So new proposed estimating method for allowable strength by failure mode and the new condition at contain of compressive failure of peg to use EYT. The hypothesis we proposed was confirmed the allowable strength by experiments.

In this paper, the seismic performance of wood-framed residential structures is investigated based on full-scale loading test and the experiment of various walls. As a result of the full-scale test, It was found that the story shear at the deformation angle 1/120rad. was recorded by 199kN, that is 3.6 times seismic capacity of shear coefficient Co=0.31. And the maximum story shear force was 308kN at 1/27rad. It corresponds to 1.4 in the base shear coefficient, which proved high capacity of resisting force. The share of horizontal force of braces had shifted from 20% to 50% according to the deformation. The shear ratio of braces was 50% or below until the maximum loading force. The resisting force capacity of the actual house was estimated by adding the capacities of each wall together. Taking account of only the capacities of brace walls, the estimated strength was about a half of the actual value. Adding the effect of gypsum boards on non-structural walls, it was precise in 80% until about 1/100rad.

To investigate the bending moment resistance at column and beam joints of traditional wooden frames, shaking table tests and static loading tests were carried out for full-scale models of traditional wooden frame. The behaviors of the bending moments at several joints during earthquakes were investigated quantitatively and qualitatively. The relationships between deformation angle and bending moment resistance of beam were also examined by noting specifically the deformation angle occurring damages of joints. From these tests, it is found that the vertical force acting on the column has little influence on the bending moment resistances of beams. Although beams were broken at the part of tenon, the beam can keep the bending moment resistance unless the part of tenon comes off from the mortise. These results are available for the seismic design and retrofit of traditional wooden structures.

Structural degradation of the East pagoda in Yakushi-ji Temple built about 1300years ago has become apparent in recent years. In this research, in order to evaluate seismic property of the east Pagoda, many seismographs were set at various points of the pagoda, and vibration tests were performed. By comparing the results of the West pagoda rebuilt about 25years ago, we have understood that the dynamic characteristics of central pillar of the East pagoda is unusual and the upper layer of the East pagoda shake widely.

The energy based seismic design for R/C structure have been developed by authors and others. The design method is to predict the maximum value of response displacement and compare the damage with the allowable maximum displacement. Up to the present, the predicting method on maximum response displacement is proposed and the validity is analytically confirmed. In order to establish the performance based seismic design, however, the following investigations should be still necessary. (1) The evaluation of damage at the each limit state(serviceability, reparability, safety) of R/C member subject to earthquake (2) The energy dissipation capacity of R/C member with flexural yielding In this paper, the static loading tests are conducted focusing on the loading history and two specimens are statically tested by using response excursion under each earthquake, other specimens are tested by regular reversed cyclic loading. The experimental results showed that each limit state is clarified and the energy dissipation capacity of specimen tested by using response excursion under each earthquake is closely related to the one obtained by regular cyclic loading. The required data to propose the calculation method of the energy dissipation capacity of R/C beam with flexural yielding subject to earthquake is obtained.

In this study, as the structure that is composed of members that ductility is different, response analysis of wall-frame structure modeled on level of member was carried out, results of that was compared with seismic performance in "the Seismic Screening Standards", the effect that member with strength deterioration affects seismic performance and applicability of evaluation using basic seismic index E_0 was examined as basic study. As the results, although the effect of strength deterioration has looseness according to the earthquake wave, it is possible that seismic capacity of structure that have a lot of deformability and strength deterioration could be overestimated in the seismic screening standards. And that behavior can be attribute damage concentration at a specific story.

Experiments of structural members are often conducted using small models. However, the size effect on strength or deformation capacity is remarkable in concrete, especially when concrete strength is high. Though many researches have been conducted to examine the size effect on strength, the size effect on the deformation capacity has rarely been examined. This paper reports the test results of 11 specimens investigating the size effect on the deformation capacity where the test parameters were strength of hoops and concrete strength. It has been revealed that strength deterioration in the deformation diagram starts earlier when the size is larger and the concrete strength is higher, because the strain in the concrete increases more rapidly. Moreover, even if the hoops do not yield, the cracks in the core concrete widen by cyclic loading, which causes the size effect as well as the diagonal compression failure near hoops.

Hydrogen explosion tests were conducted to grasp nonlinear response and to get its fundamental data for reinforced concrete walls subjected to hydrogen explosive load. In the tests, an explosive source (37m^3 -volume) that contained 30% hydrogen and 70% air was detonated, and the responses of the walls close to the source were measured. Two preliminary and three main tests were conducted for a variety of wall types with different thickness, heights, and steel reinforcements. The walls were instrumented with pressure sensors, displacement sensors, strain gauges, accelerometers and thermocouple. Wide varieties of experimental data were obtained in damage ranging from elasticity to complete failure. It was also confirmed that the wall nonlinear response depends on the blast wave duration and initial natural period. With increasing the initial natural period, the higher vibration modes were appeared on the response of the walls. Furthermore effects of strain rate were quantitatively investigated on the basis of the test results.

A flexural capacity evaluation method for precast prestressed concrete columns is proposed in the paper based on cyclic loading tests on post-tensioned column-foundation assemblages by the authors and several column specimens in past research. The ACI rectangular concrete stress block and the design equations in Standard for Structural Design and Construction of Prestressed Concrete Structures published by Architectural Institute of Japan are also used for comparison. The proposed evaluation method for flexural capacity of precast prestressed concrete columns is verified against the experimental results. A good agreement is obtained between the evaluated and experimental results. Precast columns post-tensioned by unbonded tendons are included taking incompatibility of strains between concrete and prestressing steel into account.

This paper aims 3-D FEM simulation for fracture behavior of concrete filled steel tube(CFT) in unaxial compression. In this study, bonded and un-bonded CFT were simulated. One difficulty in these simulation is interaction between concrete and steel tube. In general,volumetric change of concrete specimen under unaxial compression is linear until 75〜90% of peak strength, but, after that, nonlinearly expands. These phenomenon is known as dilatancy. To model dilatancy of concrete is important to evaluate properly the interaction. Therefore, cap surface is implemented to concrete material model to control dilatancy. As a result, reasonable simulation can be performed.

As well known, concrete-filled tubular (CFT) columns have excellent capacities for the plastic deformation and energy absorption even under high compression. In order to use the capacities of CFT columns in moment-resistant frames, a new yield mechanism is proposed where some columns are permitted to yield. In that case, the attention should be paid for the earthquake response characteristics of yielding columns. That is investigated by time-history dynamic responses of the maximum deformation and the damage in CFT columns of frame models with various number of column-to-beam strength ratios, input ground motions, stories or bays, and arrangement of columns to permitted to yield.

Present paper proposes the way of a life cycle optimization for building structures with consideration of a hierarchy by ranks of building construction systems by using genetic algorithms, with respect to ecology and economy for evaluations. It is important not only the design of structures itself but behaviors of the designed and constructed structures to be considered in their life cycle. As a different concept from the conventional design methodology, the life cycle design is becoming an essential idea for sustainability. It is required that environmental impact is clearly taken into consideration like economical efficiency in a life cycle design. That is, a life cycle design pursues the optimal solution to both the environmental impact and the economical efficiency which sometimes conflict each other. However, it is very difficult to present the theoritical design solution which satisfies both of those demands simultaneously. In this paper, the design scheme which can propose the building structures as Pareto optimal solutions with which those requirements are satisfied through usage of multiobjective genetic algorithm is proposed.

Integrity of bare timber eaves characterizing Kyoto-style traditional townhouses against external fires is examined by experiments using different design details for "Mendo" board, the joint between the beam and the roof. The experiments show significant improvement of the integrity by the use of plaster or soil on either side of the "Mendo" board, or by increasing the thickness of the "Mendo" board. Although the bare timber eaves has been long considered the main drawback of the Kyoto-style townhouses with regard to fire safety, the study has revealed that code-acceptable integrity can be achieved without introducing any industrial fire retardant agents.

The theory developed in Part 1 for the hydroelastic behavior of a mat-like floating circular plate advancing slowly in waves is extended in this paper to derive the solution for the second-order wave drift forces. The potential flow theory is employed with low forward-speed assumption and zero-draught approximation. The far-field approach based on the principle of conservation of momentum is applied to obtain the analytical expression for the wave drift forces. Numerical results are presented for a typical plate geometry, which demonstrate the significant effect of the forward speed on the hydroelastic response and wave drift forces. It is also shown that wave drift damping provides an important damping source for the slow-drift motion of a mat-like floating structure.
