The accuracy of analytical value of C in steel by QUANTOVAC analysis depends on the purity of argon gas. After some experiments, the cause of unsteadiness of C value in the analysis was found to be hydrocarbon in argon gas.Use of a special gas bomb provided with a molecular sieve lter led to satisfactory results.

A method of evaluating the effect of chopping frequency on the NS ratio that determines principally the accuracy of infrared spectrophotometry is given. The NS ratio has two components: one is due to harmonics, the so-called ripple signal, and the other the random noise. The periodic ripple component is determined by analysing the harmonics in waveform of output from the system that follows the synchronous re-tifier.The random noise component is computed in consideration of the factors such as characteristics of the detectors, power spectrum of the detector noise and overall bandwidth of the system. For realization of the above, appropriate chopping frequency ranges of commercial near infrared, infrared and far infrared spectrophotometers are calculated.

With JACO 3.4m ebert-type spectrograph, the limit of emission spectrographic determination of residual elements (Al, B, Co, Cr, Cu, Mo, Nb, Ni, Pb, Sn, Ta, Ti, V, W, Zr) in iron and steel by point-to-plane technique is studied.
The excitation is by either a high voltage a-c arc or a spark source depending on the concerned element. For preparing the calibration curve, linear scale graph paper is used instead of log-log or semi-log graph paper. This method is found more accurate and reliable than the conventional: the above elements except Ta were determined with errors of less than 10% when the concentration was higher than 0.001%.

A new type atomic absorption-flame photometer has been devised for accurate measurement, ease of operation, low cost and wide availability. It is fitted with matched interference filters, silicon photocell or photomultiplier tube and A.C.amplifying circuit. The choice between using atomic absorption method and flame analytical method is effected easily by one touch on a switch or a turn of a knob. The atomic absorption method gives less interference and better calibration curve than the flame analytical method, nevertheless, obtained results by both methods proved high stability, sensibility and reproducibility of the photometer.
