    Resonances in electron scattering and features in photoelectron spectra are largely interpretable in terms of molecular obitals (MO). In particular, resonances in electron scattering may be viewed as manifestations of unoccupied MO's, and peaks in photoelectron spectra as manifestations of occupied MO's. Thus, the sub-ject matter is closely related to the chemieal-reactivity theory of Fukui and Hoffmann, in which the HOMO and LUMO play the central role. The present article discusses some recent notable findings in the broad sub-ject matter. The discussion includes also manifestations of vibronic couplings (viz., interactions between electronic and vibrational motions), which are especially important in highly excited and ionized states of molecules.

    Monochromators making use of a Fresnel zone plate and a phase zone plate as the dispersing element were fabricated on trial. The monochromators had a pair of pinholes or optical fibers of 0.01 mm diameter for entrance and exit of light. The properties of the monochromators were examined by investigating the shape of spectra of mercury and cadmium discharge lamps in the visible region taking notice of the effects of central stops on the zone plate. Central stops were effective to reduce wings of spectral lines.
