High-performance wire grid polarizers having the grating constant of 0.41μ have been produced, using a holographic technique. The dependence of the transmittance, T1 and T2, and the degree of the polarization, P, on the thickness of aluminum layers has been examined. It was clarified that T2 was closely related to the electric resistance of aluminum layers deposited on holographic gratings and found that in interpreting the results it was convenient to introduce, in place of the actual width of a deposited aluminum layer, a concept of the equivalent width that would be determined from a theory of perfectly conducting wire grid gratings with a measured value of T2. From the results, the optimum condition for aluminizing a holographic grating was deduced. Polarizers fabricated under this condition showed the degree of polarization of 98.6%at 2μ and 99% or more at above 3μ and the transmittance T1 of 80 to 90% over a wide wavelength range.

In the atmosphere of argon, oxygen, or their mixture, relations between the line intensity of manganese in low alloy steel and the sample erosion have been studied by means of a HVS discharge with carbon or silver counter-electrode. The sample erosion was estimated from the quantity of iron deposited on the counter-electrode, because the amount of iron on the counter-electrode has been confirmed to show the linear correlations with the sample erosion in various argon-oxygen atmospheres.
In the case of the discharge in argon atmosphere, Mn II 293.3 nm line-intensity showed large value in spite of a little sample erosion with both carbon and silver counter-electrodes.
For the discharge in argon-oxygen mixed atmospheres, it was observed that the sample erosion increased with steping up the oxygen content with both counter-electrodes, but the behavior of Mn II spectral-line varied with either carbon or silver counter-electrode. Mn II line-intensity by using the carbon counter-electrode increased with steping up the oxygen content, whereas the intensity by the silver counter-electrode showed the ill-defined minimum at about 50% oxygen content.
For the discharge in oxygen atmosphere, the Mn II line-intensity showed the maximum at about 1.5 kg/cm2 oxygen pressure for both counter-electrodes, though the sample erosion increased simply with steping up the oxygen pressure.
On the basis of the results stated above, the mechanism of the evaporation process of manganese was also discussed.

Optical transfer functions (O.T.F.'s) for the correction of spectral images formed by a simple plane-grating monochromator were determined by both of theoretical and experimental procedures ; the ray-tracing method and a spectrogram of monochromatic rays were respectively used to determine line spread functions, and their Fourier transforms gave the the O. T. F.s. A spectrogram of the Na D-doublet poorly resolved was satisfactorily corrected by means of the both O. T. F.'s.
