A nondispersive atomic-fluorescence spectrometer was made to determine ultra trace mercury less than nanogram. Mercury aerated by the tin (II) reduction method was once collected as amalgam with gold. After releasing mercury from the gold amalgam at a stretch by heating in an electric furnace, the atomic-fluorescence intensity of mercury was measured with a windowless cell in argon gas atmosphere. The detection limit obtained was 0.004 ng, based on a limiting signal to noise ratio of 2: 1 and the variation coefficient was 0.95% in ten repeated runs (0.05 ng standard solution). Total mercury in human hair was accurately determined by this method combined with oxygen combustion apparatus.

Molecular absorption and emission spectra of calcium chloride and nitrate solution in air-acetylene flame were measured in the wavelength range from 200 to 650 nm. Absorption and emission spectra of CaO were measured in the wavelength range from 310 to 400 nm. Spectra of CaOH were measured in the wavelength range from 540 to 568 and from 614 to 640 nm. Especially, the spectrum of CaOH at 554 nm was absorbed strongly. The absorption spectrum of CaCl was obtained clearly in argon-hydrogen cool flame in the wavelength range from 200 to 280 nm. Then, the absorption of Ca atomic line and CaCl, CaO and CaOH molecular bands were measured as a function of hydrogen flow rate. The ratio of absorption of CaO and CaCl molecules compared with atomic Ca was greater in hydrogen lean flame. In hydrogen rich flame, the ratio of absorption of these molecules was decreased.

Spectral interferences were observed in trace element analysis of concentrated solutions by atomic absorption spectrometry. Molecular absorption and emission spectra for strontium chloride and nitrate, barium chloride and nitrate containing 12 mg/ml of metal ion in airacetylene flame were measured in the wavelength range from 200 to 700 nm. The absorption and emission spectra of SrO were centred near 364.6 nm. The absorption spectra of SrOH around 606. 0, 671. 0 and 682.0 nm were very strong. And, emission spectrum of BaOH in the wavelength range from 480 to 550 nm was stronger. But, the absorption of this band spectrum was very weak. In the wavelength range from 200 to 400 nm, some unknown bands of absorption were observed for strontium and barium. Absorption spectra of SrCl and BaCl were observed in the argon-hydrogen flame. Also, in the carbon tube atomizer, the absorption spectra of SrCl and BaCl were detected clearly in the wavelength range from 185 to 400 nm.
