In order to study the relations between the profile of excitation function and excitation mechanism, the equations of rotational coupling and radial coupling have been solved with various forms of transition moment and potential energy curve in the two-level model. The excitation functions populated by the rotational coupling through potential curve crossings at small internuclear distance increase gradually with increasing of ion energy and hardly show clear threshold. On the other hand, the excitation functions of the radial coupling increase rapidly near threshold energy and take their maximum values at low colliding energy compared with those of rotational coupling. These characteristics originating from the excitation mechanisms have been recognized on the profiles of the observed emission cross sections.

A new type of rapid scanning spectrometer was constructed for use in analytical atomic spectroscopy. The sine-bar and its driving system are disabled and the grating is driven directly by a synchronous motor. The wavelength synchronization is made by counting the photopulses generated by the combination of a small tungsten lamp, a phototransistor and a slotted aluminium disc which is attached to the shaft of the rotating grating. In an on-line and real-time mode, a variety of measurements can be achieved by a dedicated microcomputer. The basic analytical performance was evaluated and some applications are demonstrated.

A basic research is carried out to evaluate the analysis precision of laser microprobe analysis in terms of the fluctuation of laser output energy and contamination of the auxiliary sparking electrodes.
The influence of fluctuation of the laser energy on the analysis precision is studied, monitoring simultaniously the laser energy along with the spectral line intensity without auxiliary spark excitation. The fluctuation of the laser energy is very small compared with that of the spectral line intensity and no correlation is found between them. It is concluded from this that the fluctuation of the laser energy has no effect on the analysis precision.
The effect of contamination of electrodes for auxiliary sparking on the analysis precision is investigated and a cleaning procedure of the electrodes by a discharge is proposed to minimize the effect. The experiments show that the reproducibility of the analysis result is improved about two times and the linear range of the calibration curve is extended. This method is therefore useful to improve the analysis precision.
