An automated spectrofluorometer system utilizing an on-line minicomputer is described. This system primarily consists of a commercial spectrofluorometer, a minicomputer and simple peripherals. Attractive features of this system lie in the fact that the rapid collection of the absolute spectra is carried out by using correction factors derived from the results of absolute intensity measurement by means of a quantum counter. During the standardization process for the spectral correction, two individual monochromators in the instrument can be precisely synchronized like a double-monochromator with the assistance of the computer. Details of the system are presented with the results of its performance test.

A study has been made on the influences of matrix and electrode temperature on spectrographic analysis of cast iron. White cast iron, ferritic gray cast iron, pearlitic gray cast iron, blackheart malleable iron, pearlitic malleable cast iron, ferritic spheroidal graphite cast iron, and pearlitic spheroidal graphite cast iron were used for the sample electrodes.
The erosion and spectral line intensity of gray cast iron were remarkably higher than those of white, malleable or spheroidal cast irons. There was little difference between ferrite cast iron and pearlitic cast iron. These results show that the influence of matrix on spectrographic analysis depends mainly on the shape of graphite.
When a heated sample-electrode was used, the influence of matrix on spectrographic analysis decreased. One working curve obtained by using sample electrode heated at 740°C makes it possibie to analyze all types of cast irons. The causes of the decrease in the matrix effect are thought to be violent oxidation and melting of the surface of the electrode, which homogenize the surface of diffecent cast irons.

Radial intensity distribution of spectral lines in Cu-hollow-cathode discharge, in Ne, A and Xe, are measured as a function of gas pressure P. At lower pressures the maximum. intensities of Cu and rare gas lines are all located at the center of the cathode (1st type). With increasing pressure the maximum position shifts toward the circumference of the cathode (2nd and 3rd types). The pressure at which the position of the maximum intensity makes a transition from the 1st to the 3rd type is about 8 Torr in Ne, 4 Torr in A and 2.7 Torr in Xe. These pressures are inversely proportional to the ratio of the collision cross section of each gas. It is obtained experimentally that the changes in the intensity at the maximum-intensity-position with pressure can be represented by I=kP+C (k<0) for the gas lines and I'= k' log (1/P) +C' for the Cu lines.
