    When a C60 film was irradiated with UV-visible light and electron-beam under a ultrahigh vacuum condition, photo-induced polymerization and electron-induced polymerization between adjacent C60 molecules take place via [2 + 2] dumbbell-shaped and peanut-shaped cross-linkages, respectively. We have investigated the electronic structure of both dumbbell-shaped and peanut-shaped C60 polymers, using in situ x-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and found that the dumbbell-shaped C60 polymer has a two-dimensional hexagonal structure, while that the peanut-shaped C60 polymer has a quasi-one-dimensional structure. In the present paper, we review the photoelectron spectroscopic results of these low-dimensional C60 polymers, together with results of their structural and electronic properties obtained using other measurements and density-functional calculations. Finally, we will describe the perspective of both dumbbell- and peanut-shaped C60 polymers. In particular, the latter polymer is interesting to be a π-electron conjugated system with negative Gauss curvature.

    A tunable light source in the terahertz region synthesized from two CO2 lasers and a microwave source is introduced with its principles, features, and applications to high resolution spectroscopy. This light source, called TuFIR in short, covers the frequency range from about 0.5 to 6 THz. The accuracy of the synthesized frequency of about 30 kHz enables us to study the spectral lines in the terahertz region with high accuracy comparable to those of microwave spectoscopy. Examples of the spectroscopy of molecules, radicals, and molecular ions investigated with TuFIR spectrometer are shown.

  • IV.Direct-current Plasmas as Excitation Source in Atomic Emission Spectrometry

    This lecture describes the spectrochemical characteristics of direct-current discharge plasmas generated by arc, spark, and glow discharges, which are generally employed as an excitation source for direct analysis of solid samples in atomic emission spectrometry. Emission spectra excited from arc discharge plasmas under ambient atmosphere are much different from those from low-pressure glow discharge plasmas. Excitation phenomena in glow discharge plasmas are described in detail so that a particular excitation mechanism occurring in the reduced pressure plasma, called charge transfer collision, can be well understood.
