    Figure modes of Ar torch plasmas with an air cross wind were investigated. In fact, torch plasmas resemble “bamboo” with a low velocity cross wind; they revert to their original position when the low cross wind is removed. Torch plasmas have abundant elasticity; their Young's modulus has been calculated using measured deflection figures on the anode. Adopting the influence factors as the plasma current, the velocity of cross wind and the outside electrode interval, those influence on the figure modes and its Young's modulus was investigated. The Young's modulus increases to the 0.67th power of the plasma current.

    Two kinds of epoxy/silica nanocomposites, i.e. Aerosil and Nanopox specimens, were prepared to clarify the effect of nano-filler dispersion and of coupling agents on electric field endurance. According to SEM observation, nano-fillers were well dispersed in the former specimens, while some agglomeration was found in the latter specimens. This difference caused different characteristics for PD resistance and treeing resistance. PD resistance was improved only by adding nano-fillers, and treeing resistance was improved not only by adding nano-fillers but must by making nano-fillers uniformly dispersed. Coupling agents were also effective in treeing resistance in both kinds of specimens. It was then clarified that nano-fillers and coupling agents could improve PD and treeing resistance, but that treeing resistance could be upgraded or degraded depending on the level of nano-filler dispersion.

    The present paper describes an investigation conducted on metal detection with a scanning probe. The authors applied a rotating magnetic field probe to metal detection. The rotating magnetic field probe is composed of two vertically placed rectangular exciting coils and a circular detecting coil. The experimental results confirmed that the probe can detect metal objects and provide more information about their shape, direction, and electromagnetic characteristics than conventional metal detector probes. A two-dimensional signal display shows a blurred image of the metal object and the signal phase indicates the object's direction and electromagnetic characteristics. The experimental results showed that excellent restoration of the surface shapes of metal objects can be obtained for both magnetic and nonmagnetic metals under present conditions. There is also a possibility that the rough shape of a metal object can be estimated from the restored image.

    Recently, a micro lens has been demanded in uniting a laser device and an optical fiber. We have fabricated a new type of plastic micro lens by laser polymerization. The amount of the resin polymerized by exposing laser light, namely light-curing, depends on the laser power and exposing time. The shape of the lens can be controlled by changing the condition of laser irradiation.
    In this paper, the characteristic of the lens formed by this method was examined. Moreover, the relation between the lens shape and the condition of laser irradiation was investigated, and the condition to reducing a transverse spherical aberration was examined. As the result, the lens of 390μm in diameter was formed. The area which can be used for light coupling from a laser diode to a multimode fiber will be 81 % in the total lens area.

    An electrostatic neutralization of multilayer-loading silicon wafers is demonstrated using a corona discharge ionizer in nitrogen atmosphere, where ac and dc voltages are applied to two needle electrodes for generation of the negative- and positive-charged particles, respectively. We observe a surface potential of the silicon wafer decreases from ±1kV to ±20V within three seconds. Moreover, the density profiles of the charged particles generated by the electrodes are experimentally and theoretically investigated in nitrogen and air atmospheres. Our results show the possibility that the negative-charged particles contributing to the electrostatic neutralization are electrons and negative ions in nitrogen and air atmospheres, respectively.
