The standardization of place names aims to translate or transliterate the place names in the world into the context of English or other official languages of United Nations. Especially in the countries where phonetic literature is used, the place names are principally written and pronounced by their native original pronunciation. But because Chinese uses idiomatic literature, most of East Asian countries influenced by Chinese civilization have used Chinese characters for writing but pronouncing with their phonetic sound, which is sometimes similar to Chinese ancient pronunciation. Or their proper phonetic literatures, for example Hangul, Quoc-ngu or Kana have replaced the original Chinese characters. Therefore Japan, Korea or Vietnam have at least several ways to write their place names;1) Chinese characters which is one of the official languages of UN, but it is possible to be pronounced by Chinese, for example 東京(Dong-jing). 2) Romanized transliteration of their own pronounced Chinese characters, which can be used in English or other phonetic languages, for example Tokyo. 3) And of course by the characters of idiomatic system of Chinese literature, these place names can have a romanized translation, such as East Capital for Tokyo. As for the Japanese place names, we should distinguish the Chinese character is used as idiomatic way or phonetic way.
