A four-year-old, male Golden Retriever presented with acute renal failure. The dog had been responding well to symptomatic treatment until diffuse alopecia and sclerosing skin appeared. Histopathological examination of the skin revealed severe hyperplasia of connective tissue at the dermis. Complete blood counts and a serum chemistry profile failed to show any abnormality except for a mild normochromic normocytic anemia and a low level of thyroid hormone. Skin lesions improved dramatically with levothyroxine administration, and the dog did not require further treatment after its remission. At the time of writing, the skin lesions has not been observed for 6 months without treatment. It is suspected that the dermatofibrosis could be associated with secondary hypothyroidism related to the acute renal failure.

As various canine skin diseases occurring in the nasal region exhibit similar clinical signs, it is not easy to diagnose these diseases only from clinical symptoms. However, definitive diagnosis is requested in these diseases for understanding the prognosis and the proper therapies. In this report, we performed skin biopsy on five cases of canine dermatoses occurred in the nose and diagnosed each as eosinophilic folliculitis, solar dermatitis, pemphigus foliaceus, pemphigus vulgaris, and discoid lupus erythematosus.
