    This paper is concerned with the prediction of flexural creep fracture for CFRP laminates consisting of satin woven carbon fibers and high temperature epoxy matrix, of which glass transition temperature Tg=236°C. The flexural creep fracture tests were practically carried out under various stress level at 50°C to be sufficiently lower than the Tg. On the other hand, the static flexural tests were carried out under various deflection rates and temperatures. The master curve of flexural strength of CFRP was obtained by applying the reciprocation law between time and temperature to these experimental results. Furthermore, the flexural creep fracture of CFRP was estimated by utilizing the linear cumulative damage rule adapted to this master curve. The creep fracture predicted by the method mentioned above is fairly well agreed with that measured by creep tests.

    Three-dimensional composites with more than 3 axes consist of roving or rod-shape unidirectional composite materials which are arranged to different orientations and resin matrix filled among them. This paper describes the arrangement of the fiber bundles in 3-dimensional composites with 3 to 7 axes, and proposes the calculating method to determine the size and the shape of the fiber bundles and the volume fraction of the fiber in the composites. Based on this method, the structures of representative 3-dimensional composites with 4 to 7 axes were clarified. Furthermore the shape of section and the volume fraction of the fiber bundles were found to change by not only the number of axis or its arrangement, but also the size of the unit element or the sectional area of the fiber bundles.

    Braided fabrics are useful as one of the techniques in realizing the concept of near-net shape in the reinforcement configuration of composite materials. When structural members are connected with other members, the mechanically fastened joint is well known as one of the simplest method. It has been confirmed in our previous paper that braided flat bar with a braided hole in which the fibers continuously orient, has high joint performance with small joint geometry. The effect of middle-end-fibers which are one of the braiding techniques is discussed in this paper. It is proved that performance of mechanically fastened joints with braiding structure containing middle-end-fibers is superior to no middle-end-fibers. Moreover, the effect of the continuous fibers at the sides of the flat braid is also discussed. It is clear that these continuous fibers are effective to raise joint strength.

    The effect of molecular weight of matrix resin on mechanical properties of injection molded, short carbon fiber reinforced polycarbonate composites was studied. Tensile strength and flexural strength of the composite increased with the decrease in the molecular weight of the matrix resin. The interfacial shear strength and the fiber length in the composites were measured in order to investigate the strengthening mechanism of the composites. It was found that the improvement of mechanical properties in the case of low molecular weight of the matrix resin was caused by the restraint from shortening of the fiber length in the composite and the increase in the interfacial shear strength between fiber and matrix resin. Especially, the fiber length in the composite play a main role in the strengthening mechanism of the composite.
