The mutual adhesion of polymer and vacuum-deposited aluminium was measured by the scratching method and the adhesion mechanism was discussed. We estimated the adhesion of evaporated metal to polymer, assuming that it was attributed only to van der Waals' force. The experimental result nearly agreed with the values calculated based on van der Waals' force between aluminium oxide and polymer, not between aluminium and polymer.
The polymer substrates used in our experiment were polyester, polyvinyl chloride and cellulose acetate. Both in the experiment and in theoretical estimation, polyester showed the strongest adhesion and cellulose acetate the weakest.
