One hundred and seventy four liver biopsies were performed in our hospital in the last 8 years.
1. Though there was 4 cases of shock no deaths occured.
2. The cases were as follows: hepatitis 71, liver cirrhosis 39, jaudice of unknown origin 14, liver tumor 9, schistosomiasis japonica 4, Dubin-Johnson's syndrome 1, the other 36.
3. Histologically hepatitis was ciassified as acute severe hepatitis (H
1 type), subacute hepatitis (H
2 type), portal hepatitis (H
3 type), mild hepatitis (H
4 type) and hepatosis (H
5 type). Liver cirrhosis was divided into liver fibrosis (C
1 type), post necrotic cirrhosis (C
2 type), portal cirrhosis (C
3 type), and biliary cirrhosis (BC type). Liver function was damaged most severely in the order of H
1, H
2, H
3, H
4 and H
5 accordingly in cases of hepatitis and in cirrhosis C
2, BC, C
1, C
3 accordingly.
The average dnration from the onset of the disease to discharge from the hospital was H
1 97 days, H
2 42 days, H
3 27 days, H
4 32 days, C
1 4 months, C
2 5 months and C
3 3 years.
In the follow-up of the 64 cases of hepatitis complaints of subjective symptoms were most in order of H
1, H
2, H
4, H
3 after discharge C
2 had the most complaints among cirrhosis.
Those with severe jaundice histologically were found to have bad prognosis.
