This report describes the improvement of a touch probe which is used in the region of the usual size called macro region. In recent years, manufacturing technologies which can create high-aspect-ratio shapes have advanced. On the other hand, measurements of high-aspect shapes such as deep holes and deep gaps have become difficult. In this report, a high-aspect-ratio touch probe for macro region has been developed with reference to the vibrating touch probe technology that is frequently used in the field of nano and micro region measurements.

By using a hydrothermal method, PZT thin film can be easily deposited on the substrate of three-dimensional structure. Therefore PZT thin film is applied to a micro piezoelectric actuator. In this study, PZT thin film has been deposited on a bullet shape titanium substrate 2mm and 10mm in diameter by the hydrothermal method and a ultrasonic transducer was fabricated. In addition, a ultrasonic transducer was evaluated by underwater experiment.

Cutting force increases due to tool wear which causes additional machining error. In this paper, a machining error prediction model by considering the effect of tool wear is presented. Real cutting length at each cutting edge position is calculated, and the increase of cutting force and the recession of the cutting edge are modeled as a function of the real cutting length. The presented model was verified with cutting experiments of radius end milling of S55C. The machining errors showed a good agreement with the prediction and were decreased from 49μm to 7μm by applying the prediction on the tool paths modification.

The paper discusses burr formation of ultra fine grained stainless steel with measuring the cutting force and the surface finish in milling. Burr formation in cutting of the ultra fine grained steel is smaller than that of the normal steel. Then, burr formation is associated with the force ratio at the end of cut. A model is presented to explain burr formation with the force ratio.

Single-phase (binderless) nano-polycrystalline cBN consisting of small cBN grains of less than several tens or hundreds nanometers in size without any binder materials has successfully synthesized by direct conversion from hBN under high pressure and high temperature. The nano-polycrystalline cBN has high hardness, high strength and high thermal stability. In order to clarify its potentiality for industrial uses in high-precision cutting tools, the mechanical properties of the nano-polycrystalline cBN were systematically investigated. The basic performance tests for high-precison cutting tools on a hardened steel were also evaluated. These results revealed that the nano-polycrystalline cBN has an extremely high potential for high-precision cutting tools for high strength ferrous material.
