    There are many technics, to obtain a carbon mold of high density and strength, one of which is to increase the coking value of its binder. It is well known that the coking value of coal tar pitch is increased by adding some oxidizing agents such as S, FeCl3, organic nitro compounds and so on, but these agents are not always available because of the low kick-off temperature, below 200°C.
    Authors studied the reaction between coal tar pitch and fine powder of Ni and clarified that;
    (1) Ni acts upon coal tar pitch followed with the increment of emission of hydrogen, the restrainment of that of methan, the increment of free carbon contents, C/H ratio and sof tening point of it.
    (2) The kick-off temperature of the reaction is nearly equal to that of coal tar pitch without Ni, namely about 300°C.
    (3) Carbon mold of high density and high strength can be obtained by using coal tar pitch with Ni (1.5%) as the binder.
    (4) Ni can be used for the catalyst of dehydrogenation of coal tar pitch.

    In previous investigation+, it was found that some aluminosilicate minerals including sericite are effective as the catalyst on graphitization of carbon.
    Accordingly, this investigation was carried out in order to search the effective elements in the compositions of such minerals and any other catalyst in general, thus to systematize the catalytic actions of various metallic elements on graphitization.
    Metallic elements were used in a simple substance, oxide or carbonate according to the chemical properties of each element, as sodium was used in carbonate. Titanium dioxide, V2O5, Fe2O3, Au, Li2CO3, Ag, MgO, BaCO3, SrCO3, Mo, Pt, K2CO3, Zn, Al2O3, ZrO2, SiO2, Bi, Cr2O3, WO3, Se, Mn, CoO, Sn, Sb, Na2CO3, Cu, CaO, HgO, Pb, Cd, and Ni were tested. Each substance was admixed in carbon as its content becomes 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 3% as a simple substance of metal. The results were as follows.
    The systematization of the catalyst on graphitization was failed, because each substance did not show the noticeable tendency on the catalytic action. Though titanium, iron, and vanadium showed the remarkable effects, the others showed very small or almost no effect. The order of catalytic effectiveness of each one on graphitization is shown above. Iron is the only effective element in the compositions of such minerals, but its action was less thin the the actions of such minerals in our experimental conditions. Iron also exhibits the purifying action, as sericite showed.
    In another experiments, the influece of heat-treatment temperature on the actions of Al, Al2O3, Si, SiO2, and SiC was examined. In this case, Al, Al2O3, Si, SiO2 again showed almost no effect, as they already showed in the above experiment. but SiC was effective. For instance, the effect obtained by applying 4% of SiC was equivalent to that of the application of 5% of kaolinite, though it did not reach that of the application of 5% of scricite. From this fact, it is imagined that the formation or decomposition of metallic carbide may be part of the mechanism of catalytic action of ash. More, the fact that Si, SiO2 of the raw substances of SiC are not effective notwith-standing SiC is effective is the subject of absorbing interest.

    In order to find out profitable uses for the carbon, produced in the Texaco processed Furnaces, the changes of behaviors and properties after heat treatments were studied, and compared with those of acetylen black, whick is commonly used in the dry battery industry.
    The following 6 propertes of both carbons treated at 300°-200°C were studied; (1) initial apparent specific volume υo, (2) apparent specific volume after 100 times tapping υt, (3) apparent specific volume compressed statically υc, (4) oil adsorption, (5) electric resistance and (6) observation of the configuration of the “Structure” by an electron micrography, and the results were discussed.

    By means of the flexural vibration method, the temperature dependence of Young's modulus of polycrystalline graphites in the range from room temperature to 1000°C, has been investigated under a variety of conditions; e. g. in vacuum, nitrogen and argon.
    The effects of repeated heating and cooling, heating rate and holding time have also been investigated.
    In every case, the curves of Young's modulus vs. temperature showed the hysteresis between heating and cooling, and showed a minimum value at about 200-400°C during heating.
    In vacuum, the degree of the hysteresis was larger than in gas atmosphere.
    In gas atmosphere, a characteristic inflexion was observed in the 1st heating.
    Except in the 1st heating cycle in gas atmosphere, the relation between Young's modulus and temperature during heating could be approximately expressed by the formula: ET/E50=a+bT+cT2.
    The temperature dependence of Young's modulus was also influenced by the heating rate and holding time.

    When load current change is suddenly, commutation conditions of d. c. machines are impaired and then the brush sparks appear instantaneously under the transient state.
    Commutation condition depends upon the relation between load current and interpole flux density. Under the transient state, eddy currents of the flux path tend to oppose the interpole flux change.
    This paper describes a method of calculating the rise of interpole flux by equivalent circuit of eddy currents, and analyzes the commutation condition under the transient state in relation to the black band of d. c. machine under the steady state.
