    Boron-dope effects on galvanomagnetic properties and diamagnetism have been investigated of the so-called turbostratic carbon prepared froma Texas coke by heat treatment at 2100°C.The Fermi level was determined by confronting the temperature dependence data of diamagnetic susceptibility with the Haering-Wallace formula based on a band model of two-dimensional graphite, its depression due to boronation being 0.065 to 0.40 eV into the valence band.The characteristic negative magnetoresistance has been found not sensitive to the position of the Fermi level determined in this way.A simple calculation based on the uncertainty principle indicates that the application of such a band model is inappropriate to the specimens whose Fermi level depression exceeds 0.1 eV;another approach is desired to be examined, taking into account the amorphous structure.

    The statistical distribution of the tensile and bending strengths has been studied on the gilsocarbon isotorpic graphite (IM2-24) and the petroleum coke fine-grained isotropic graphite (7477PT) and the irradiation effect on the statistical nature of strength has also been studied on the former graphite.
    As a result, the data of tensile and bending strengths can be well approximated by both the Weibull and the normal distributions.Both the Weibull modulus, m and the normalizing factor, σ0 in the Weibull statistics of strengths of irradiated graphite increased as compared with those for unirradiated one.The effect of specimen volume on strengths was not large as predicted by the Weibull theory.The experimental value of the bending to tensile strength ratio was larger than the calculated one based on the Weibull statistics.However, results based on the pseud-Weibull statistics, in which only the m value in the Weibull parameters m and σ0 is taken as the same value in the tensile and bending strengths, was comparatively consistent with the experimental value for 7477PT graphite.In conclusion, the weakest link model is considered to be able to apply approximate-ly but not exactly to the fracture of graphite.

    The electrophoretic mobility of the graphite dispersed into aqueous alkaline solutions (monovalent cations) was studied to elucidate electric charging phenomena of graphite, and the influence of cations (I) on the mobility of graphite was measured under the condition of thesame concentration of an anion (OH-).The order of the influence of the cations on the mobility was as follows:
    Li+>Na+>K+>NH+4>Cs+, and this order was the reverse to that of the ionic absolute mobility. Further, the electric charge in the alkaline solutions was negative, andOH-was the potential-determining ion on the surface of graphite with functional groups, such as carboxylic and phenolic groups.

    Effect of hot-pressing temperature was investigated on some properties of polycrystalline coke compacts made from calcined pitch coke powder with 10% B2O3 addition at various temperatures from 1200 to 2200°C under a pressure of 200kg/cm2.Bulk density was almost constant as 1.6g/cm3 up to 1800°C, and increased rapidly to about 2.0 g/cc above 2000°C.Mechanical strength once decreased at temperature range from 1600 to 1800°C, and it increased again above 2000°C.Graphitization proceeded remarkably above 2000°C.B4C was formed at 1600°C and amount of B4C decreased with increase of temperature.
    The hot-pressed compacts could be classified into three types.The first is the one made below 1400°C in which coke particles adhered each other with B203 glass phase, the second is the one made between 1600 and 1800°C which consist of the mixture of coke particle and small amount of B4C exist independently, and the last is the one made above 2000°C of which boron is considered to give strong influence for sintering and graphitization of coke by its diffusion into coke structure.
