The Carbon Foam reported on this paper is prepared in a specific way by utilizing “Krecasphere”* a hollow carbon microsphere.
“Krecasphere” is first fabricated to green foam with organic binders such as phenolic resin. Then green foam is carbonized at 1000°C in inert atomosphere.
Krecasphere Carbon Foam thus produced is quite characteristic compared with various carbon foams and porous carbons produced commercially so far.
Its density and pore size are controllable at a desired value, pore size distribution is sharp, high mechanical strength to density ratio is attainable, it consists of closed pores as well as open pores leading to its good thermal insulating properties, and moreover, “Foam” of a large dimention can be obtained without much difficulty.
Accordingly, Krecasphere Carbon Foam may be applied in many fields including such fields that ordinally carbon foams have not been applicables: thermal insulation at high temperature (nuclear reactor, rocket, vacuum furnace etc.), carbon brick, filters for gases and liquids, oil separator, and the like.
