Most of the effciency of the are furnace for steel manufacture depend on the ingenuity of the design. However, there has been scarcely found any anouncement of the design and any dependable standard especially with reference to the situation of Japan. The author described Heroult arc furnaces of the 0.05 to 20 t capacities which are most currently used for steel manufacture and informed of the actual numerical data.

Precision working of the mill is the first condition for installing the mill for rolling precision products strongly, accurately and rightly. The next important point in the installation is tightly and exactly to fix the bed plate. For that purpose, the load block with a suitable size is laid on the bed, on which the bed plate placed, and between the aforementioned two a liner with horizontal sides (finished to parallel planes) inserted, and finally the horizon of the bed plate determined. The number of the liner is accustomed to be one, but in some cases double liner may be used, while triple layers of liner are the allowable maximum. The use of a wedge liner is strictly prohibited. Basing on these principles, the author described the installation of the continuous mill for rolling wide strips.

Piano wire plays an important part at present as the material steel wire in the manufacture of various kinds of high grade springs for arms. Before the Daitôa-Sen (the War for the Greater East Asia) we have depended solely on Swedish steel for the material of piano wire Inthese circumstances we, as a member of the Nihon Gakuzyutu Sinkôkai (Committee for the Encouraging Scientific Research of Japan), by the demand and support of military authorities, and with the support of Dr. Tawara, the chair-man of the committe, and that of other participants, have made efforts to make it at home. After more than fifteen times of tests and investigations, we at last succeeded in manufacturing piano wire as excellent as that of Swedish made.
Now we, as one of the cooperative technicians, first report on the characteristics of piano wire and the Japanese Engineering Standard for it, and then on the necessary properties and the procesees of manufacturing of the material for piano wire. and lastly on the effect of the various factors in the raw material and working.
