    Recent advances in the feasibility studies related to the Stirling engines and Stirling engine heat pumps which have been considered attractive due to their promising role in helping to solve the global environmental and energy problems,are reviewed. This article begins to describe the brief history of the Stirling engines and theoretical thermodynamic analysis of the Stirling cycle in order to understand several advantages on the Stirling engine. Furthermore,they could throw light on our question why the dream engines had not been promoted to practical applications during two hundred years. The present review shows that the Stirling engines with several unique advantages including 30 to 40% thermal efficiency and preferable exhaust characteristics,had been designed and constructed by recent tackling for the development of the advanced automobile and other applications using them. Based on the current state of art,it is being provided to push the Stirling engines combined with heat pumps based on the reversed Rankine cycle to the market. At present,however, many problems, especially for the durability, cost, and delicate engine parts must be enforced to solve. In addition,there are some possibilities which can increase the attractiveness of the Stirling engines and heat pumps. The review closes with suggestions for further research.

    In the present paper,onedimensiona1freezing process of an aqueous solution of sodium chloride,and melting process of the frozen solution were studied experimentally and analytically. A numerica1 analysis was performed,considering a mass diffusion within the mushy region which is a heterogeneous materia1including the solid phase and the liquid phase. The distribution of the temperature,the position of freezing or melting front and the average solid fraction in the mushy region were measured,varying a few parameters such as initial temperature,and initial concentration and the temperature of the cooling wall. Especially, an experiment for the case of the concentration above the eutectic point was inc1uded. The infuluences of the above parameters on the freezing and me1ting processes were clarified. The experimental results were compared with the analytical results. From close agreement between both results,it was shown that this analysis was effective. Besides,by the present analysis,it was clear that the influence of flow caused by the difference between the density of the liquid and that of the solid,on the temperature field,was very small. At last,it was shown by the present analysis that a mass diffusion in the mushy region affected the distribution of concentration in the liquid region,after the growth of freezing front stopped.

    Heat and mass transfer processes are experimentally investigated for the case of water absorption into aqueous solutions of lithium bromide flowing over a flat plate. Variables considered are inlet solution flow rate,concentration of an additive,and inclination angle of the plate. The use of 2-ethyl-1-hexanol as an additive results in about a four to five fold improvement in absorption rate. The occurrence of surface distrbances dose not has a direct connection with the solubility limit of the additive. The cause of the surface disturbances in the presence of additives is investigated through experiments for pool absorption By regulating the flow of water vapor,the form of the Marangoni convection can be controlled. A qualitative discussion of addictives in the role of inducing surface disturbances is presented.

    Thermodynamic properties of HCFC142b,namely saturated densities,vapor pressures and PVT properties,were measured and the critical parameters were determined through those experimental results. The correlations for vpor pressure, saturated liquid density and PVT properties deduced from those experimental results were compared with the measured data and also with the estimates of the other correlations published in literatures. The thermodynamic functions,such as enthalpy,entropy,heat capacity and etc.,could be considered to be reasonab1y estimatedby the expression reported in this paper.

    The radiation characteristics of the frost layer(reflectance,transmittance and absorptance )were measured using three kinds of the radiative energy source having various wavelength spectra. It was clarified that the monochromatic transmittance of the frost layer in the visible and infrared wavelength ranges was a law constant value. The reflectance and absorptance of the frost layer increased with an increase in the frost height and density,on the other hand,the transmittance of the frost layer decreased with increasing those values. The reflectance,absorptance and transmittance of the frost layer on melting process by radiative energy had the same tendency as on frosting process in both visible and infrared wavelength ranges. Furthermore,the reflectance and transmittance of the frost layer in the infrared wavelength range were lower than those in the length range tended to be while the absorptance in the infrared wavelngth range tended to be higher. It was found that the directional reflectance increased with an increase in the frost density and the frost height. The angular characteristics of reflectance of the frost layer were also affected strongly by the reflectional properties of the cooling surface with a decrease in the frost height, frost density or an increase in the frost melting time.

    In a triac controlled-split-capacitor motor, vibration and acoustic noise are produced by the interaction of the time-harmonic field. This paper describes the vibration of a fan motor which may be produced when speed is controlled using a conventional triac AC controller Pulasting torque is analysed by the electromagnetic method and pulsating troque equations are derived. The vibration spectrum of a motor with triac excitation are mesured in three vibrational directions under various operating conditions.
    It is shown that the connection of a triac in series with the main winding is more effective for the reduction of vibration and power input than that in series with motor supply. It is also shown that the value of capacitor chosen for optimum motor performance with a main-frequency sinusoldal supply is not always the same as that for minimizing motor vibration.

    A cryo-shattering separation is a recently developed separation method which is applied to collect low-fat meat from fatty fish. This separation method needs to be operated at the optimum temperature for the cryo-shattering. Determining on optimum temperature needs much works and costs. In this study,an easy method to estimate the optimum temperature for cryo-shattering was proposed using a Charpy impact tester. Four kinds of characteristic temperatures observed through impact tests were used to construct a fracture-temperature-map. By use of the map,the optimum temperature for cryo-shattering was obtained without shattering/sieving experiments.

    Considering that gape and heave produced during the freezing of tuna fish derive from changes in the mechanical properties of tuna fish itself during freezing,the Poisson's ratio and Young's modulus of tuna meat were measured at the respective temperature conditions of i) no freezing,ii) partial freezing,and iii) freezing. The results of measurement were shown that the mechanical properties of tuna meat displayed temperature dependence as sudden change at the boundary temperature of freezing beginning as summarized below: 1) the mechanical properties of tuna meat were anisotropic according to the tissue and structure of the fish body,but these properties greatly varied according to the test temperature;2) the Young's modulus of non-frozen tuna meat were approximately 50 KPa,but these became an extremely large value (approxi111ately 4 GPa) after being frozen; and 3) the Poisson's ratio decreased as the frozen water percentage increased,but these displayed an approximate value of one or more.

    When CFC-12 is replaced by HFC-134a in small-sized refrigeration compressors for domestic refrigerators, the coefficient of performance (COP) of rotary compressors decreases. On the other hand,the COP of reciprocating compressors is almost the same as that of CFC-12. The main causes of rotary compressor performance decrease are higher viscosity of HFC-134a/oil mixture,and greater re-expansion loss of gas in clearance volume. The performance is improved by optimizing the oil viscosity through directly measuring viscosity of HFC-134a/oil mixture inside the compressor chamber with a viscosity sensor. Difference of oil type has small influence on the COP.
