Introducing geoparks in Japan is important, necessary, and timely. There are, however, a few important issues to be discussed. Concerned organizations and individuals should understand the purposes and roles of geoparks. Geoparks should not be used as a tool to increase income from tourism alone. Geoparks should be related to conserving geodiversity (geoconservation) , so expected tourism development in geoparks should be directed toward ecotourism. The Ministry of the Environment concerns only biodiversity conservation so far; however, it is expected to include geodiversity conservation as a part of the ministry's national strategy. Developing geoparks in Japan requires governmental and academic initiatives but it also needs the involvement of the locals.
