In recent years, various kinds of aggregates are being developed for the purpose of utilization of solid waste. Generally, these types aggregates contain microscopic pores in these matrixes. Porous aggregates which were chosen as the subject to the study, are artificial light-weight aggregate (expanded shale type and sintered fly-ash type), artificial super light-weight aggregate (expanded shale type and sintered fly-ash type, ryolite type and waste glass type) and recycled aggregate, total pore volume, pore radius distribution, density, absorption, strength of aggregate were measured. Mechanical properties, unit weight, compressive strength, Young's modulus of the mortar containing these porous aggregates were measured. Correlation between characteristic of porosity and conventional quality evaluation items, and mechanical properties of mortar were examined.

The autogenous shrinkage must be measured immediately after casting in mould because that the concrete is the most sensitive to internal stresses. We proposed a measurement method by using the thin strain gauge covered with water-proof silicone sealant having remarkably lower elastic modulus. The manufacturing method of strain gauge and measuring condition were investigated. The effects of water to cement ratio and volume concentration of aggregate on autogenous shrinkage of cement based materials were experimentally investigated by using the proposed measuring method. The water to cement ratio have a large influence on the autogenous shrinkage within the age of 1day, but have less influence after the age of 1day. It is conformed that the autogenous shrinkage of cement paste may be closely linked with the hydration of cement because that the rapid initial shrinkage and expansion of cement paste at very early age accompany temperature rising of paste. We tried to estimate the effect of volume concentration of aggregate on shrinkage of cement mixes by using composite models.

We investigated hydration and strength development of cementitious materials cured under freezing or drying condition experimentally. The test results show that hydration and strength development depend on both temperature and chemical potential of water. Theoretical study makes it clear that effect of temperature follows the Arrhenius equation and the activation energy in the equation is proportional to the decrease of chemical potential. Consequently the equivalent maturity method that describes the rate of hydration under drying and freezing condition was proposed.

In this paper, quantitative evalunation method for constitutive law of heat liberation of concrete member using low heat type cement was investigated. Low heat type cement made use of fly-ash cement and low-heat portland cement. The experiments of concrete members were determined in summer and winter season. In the range of this study, the following were revealed: 1) The integrated heat liberations of concrete members could be evaluated by difference analytical method using a one dimensional heat diffusion model. 2) The thermal properties of members could be evaluated by solution analytical method. 3) The constitutive laws of heat liberation in summer and winter season for fly-ash cement and low-heat portland cement were proposed.

Shear stress in plain and normal one of the axis of member. direction due to differential movements of finishing materials and components bonded on concrete structures is dealt with on the basis of shear lag theory herein. The distributions of these kinds of stress and the effects of both geometries and physical properties are clarified. In case of monolithic finishing materials, the comparison between the solution of the shear lag theory and the accurate resolution is deduced. As a result, the expressions predicting the maximum values is deduced. In addition, in case of finishing materials which consist of two layers, the prediction expressions are also deduced.

he long term strength in a high strength concrete structure is known to less than that of standard cured specimens. This difference is caused by the curing temperature experienced at early age, but, the detailed mechanism of the phenomenon is unknown. In this work, the strength development and porosity of test specimens under various temperature conditions were investigated. It was found that the difference between strength in a structure and that of standard cured specimen does not increase in proportion to the decrease in the water-cement ratio. And the detailed mechanism of the phenomenon is explained by the relation between aging time and porosity of the test specimens.

This paper deals with an investigation on the shear failure condition of fresh mortar by a microscopic approach. Fresh mortar is considered to be a kind of particle assembly containing cohesive-fictional particles (cement) and frictional particles (aggregate), and the equations for shear failure condition are obtained by considering the balance of forces acting on all particles. It is concluded that the limit stress at intrinsical shear failure of fresh mortar is dependent on its particle fabric characteristics and is proportional to vertical compressive stress, and that its shear failure condition follows Mohr ・ Coulomb's yield condition. Moreover, the mechanism that the limit stress at apparent shear failure limit stress increases with the increase of loading speed and the viscosity of specimen is also clarified.

The aim of this study is to investigate the applicability of hot concrete to cold weather concreting. We carried out some experiments about the mix design, the properties at early ages, i.e. slump-loss and setting time, and the strength development of hot concrete for applying cold weather concreting. The use of superplasticizer is necessary to reduce the unit water content of hot concrete. The strength development of the hot concrete using superplasticizer is much the same as that of ordinary concrete. It was clarified that the slump retention type or the retardation type superplasticizer are effective to decrease the slump-loss of hot concrete and the average temperature of concrete for 60 minutes after mixing must be made less than 30℃.

For the purpose of studying evaluation method of shock absorption and stability of gymnastics landing surfaces, we did experiments on jumps and landings in men's gymnastic vault with five top-1evel male gymnastics. The landing performances and landing loads on four common skills were examined by 3-D high-speed video analysis and measurement of landing load with force plate. Consequently, we clarified the ranges of and the correlation between the parameters, namely, velocity and angle of the center of gravity, angular velocity of salto and twist, and maximum vertical and horizontal load, etc. in the landing.

Reliability of structures and structural systems may be effected by changes in strength due to past loading history or aging. So the probability of safely resisting all the loads of a loading sequence in service is an important and the most meaningful measure of its safety. However, the current research concerning reliability of structures and structural systems is mostly concentrated on reliability analysis ignoring the influence of load history, because of complexity of probabilistic treatment of its effect. In this paper, the analysis method to assess reliability of structural systems with strength deterioration due to aging is presented, by introducing the probability density function of the residual strength of survived structural systems.

The reliability of the shear failure tend to be evaluated regarding the shear force developed at the yielding mechanism as the load, although the seismic reliability of structure is evaluated to the seismic load. The reliability of the shear failure must be evaluated to the seismic load, because it is impossible to compare each other between the reliability indices to the different loads. In this paper, the approximate equation for the probability of shear failure of reinforced concrete building to the seismic load during the reference period is presented. The probability of shear failure is evaluated in explicit form utilizing Cornell's method. By the dynamic magnification effect, the response shear force of column increases over the force developed at the overall yield mechanism. In order to take that effect into account, the increment of shear force over the existing shear force at the mechanism is assumed to be proportional to the peak ground acceleration. The exceeding probability of the peak ground acceleration is approximated by Frechet distribution.

A new mathematical model of the Maxwell-type non-linear viscous damping characteristics is presented. Using this model, the response of a single-degree-of-freedom system with the non-1inear viscous damping characteristics subjected to a typical strong earthquake excitation is examined by time-history response analysis. Numerical examples are presented and the accuracy of the model is demonstrated through the input-output energy balance. An application of the model to estimation of the optimum parameters of the non-linear viscous damper for mitigating seismic response is discussed for m.d.o.f. structural systems on the basis of random earthquake response analysis. From two viewpoints of preserving seismic safety and improving structural comfortability, the optimum damper parameters are determined; i.e., the systems suffer no damage under medium earthquake excitations, while the systems suffer only minor recoverable damage under severe earthquake excitations.

This paper presents a response analysis method for the structures with both of elast-plastic dampers and viscous ones by a pseudo-modal analysis. The method is based on the equivalent linearized system introduced by expressing the effect of elasto-plastic dampers as an equivalent stiffness with complex numbers. The dynamic properties are judged on the bases of the eigen value problem for the equivalent system, that is, the fact that the sum of the two eigenvalues of a SDOF system with complex stiffness expresses the effect of viscous damping and the product of them indicates the effect of hysteretic damping. The response analyses for two cases are conducted by making use of the presented modal analysis method. This paper shows that the results presented by the modal analysis have a good agreement with the ones derived from step by step time history analysis.

On the demolition works of steel buildings which reach their durable period, the blasting demolition method might be very effective. In order to control the demolition of steel buildings safely and surely, it is necessary that the minimum amount of high explosives can be estimated. Therefore, as the basic study which probes the impact fracture mechanisms of H-shaped steel columns with shaped charges, we prepared the shaped charges, whose design parameters are materials of liners, and obtained the control of the cutting and removal of H-shaped steels through many experiments. And we are based upon the photograph with a high speed camera, measured cutting behaviors and plastic deformations of H-shaped steel columns.

A cylindrical earth retaining wall 144m in diameter was adopted for the excavation work of a large-scale underground substation building. This paper first describes the features of the earth retaining wall behavior as obtained by various field measurements during the excavation work. Second, this paper also describes the aspects, which were ascertained by the monitored behavior, to be taken into consideration in the design of large-scale cylindrical earth retaining structures. Following this paper, we will present a practical design method, and verify it by comparison with the measured behavior.

In recent years, large-scale numerical analysis in structural design are increasingly demanded because of the necessity of realizing dynamic response analysis with elastic plastic behaviors in large-scale space frame structures. In order to realize large-scale numerical analysis, the developments of new high performance computing system without super-computers are desired. In several approaches, a parallel computing system is especially gathering the most attention for engineers. Thus the purpose of this study is to develop a parallel processing system for the dynamic analysis by using a PC cluster, which is a group of personal computers connected to a network mutually. Furthermore the calculating ability of the system is investigated by the numerical experiments for single layer lattice domes in this paper. It is demonstrated that the iteration method proposed to the dynamic analysis for structures is suitable for parallel calculations. Accordingly it was found through numerical experiments that the ability of parallel computing in this system produce good results and that parallel calculations using PC cluster with four personal computers reduce total analysis times to about 54% for models with different number of freedoms.

When coarse aggregate is made out of concrete waste at demolishing concrete structure, in many cases, fine aggregate with small particle diameters is also made at the same time. Therefore, it is a effective use of concrete waste that fine aggregate is used as well as coarse aggregate. However the material properties of recycled concrete are varied by the blend proportion of fine and coarse aggregate. This blend proportion influences the mechanical performance of structural members made of recycled aggregate concrete. The recycled aggregate concrete composed of 100% recycled fine and coarse aggregate is considered to have the worst material properties. This paper reports on the experiments on the flexural, shear, and bond failure of RC beams made of the recycled aggregate concrete composed of 100% recycled fine and coarse aggregate, and examines such concrete's capabilities as appropriate material for a seismic performance of RC frames.

The flexural behavior of reinforced concrete composite beams composed of pre-cast units in which cracks appeared due to construction loading was investigated, and a precise stress analysis method for such a composite beam's section was proposed. Two experiments using eight specimens were conducted considering three parameters: construction load level on pre-cast unit, depth of pre-cast unit and prestress on pre-cast unit. The flexural stiffness of composite beams with cracked pre-cast units was shown to be obviously higher than that of beams which were not loaded at the construction stage, and the average initial crack widths of the former were smaller than those of the latter. The results calculated by the recommended analytical method corresponded closely with the measured values

The cast-in-place-concrete piles can be slimmed by the construction method of the under-reamed pile. However, the seismic shear stress increases because the area of the pile head decreases. In this paper, first, the specification of such piles and the result of frame analysis which consists of building and foundation are shown as the background data. Secondly, the earthquake-resistant properties of reinforced concrete piles with the normal-strength transverse reinforcement(350MPa) or the high-strength transverse reinforcement(1300MPa) are experimentally considered. Six-teen specimens were tested; two with the diameter of 450mm, twelve with the diameter of 350mm, and two with the diameter of 300mm. The specimens with the diameter of 450mm are models of standard cast-in-place-conerete piles, and the specimens with the diameter of 350mm or 300mm are models of under-reamed piles. Experimental results show that, when properly reinforced with the transverse reinforcement, slim reinforced concrete piles can exhibit stable hysteretic behavior and significant ductility.

The objectives of this research are to clarify the shear resistance mechanisms of R/C columns having wing walls retrofitted with continuous fiber sheets and to derive the formula to evaluate the ultimate shear strengths. In this paper, the bond behavior between carbon fiber sheets and concrete surface, which were attached using epoxy resin and the ultimate shear strengths of R/C columns having wing walls without retrofit are clarified and evaluated quantitatively. Then, the formula to evaluate the ultimate shear strengths of R/C columns having wing walls retrofitted with continuous fiber sheets is developed, being based on above results. Fairly good agreement between experimental and calculated results of the ultimate shear strength is shown.

In this paper, the authors investigate the influence of the wing walls on the flexure strength of the columns by the sectional analysis. The results are as follows; 1) The analytical results showed that the relationship between the moment and the axial force of the columns with wing walls is different from that of the rectangular cross-section. 2) The flexure strength calculated by the existing conventional equations for columns with wing walls dose not accord with the analytical value of that. 3) The authors present the new flexure strength formula. The calculated value by that has good accordance with the test and analytical value.

We propose new supporting system of base columns that have superior flexibility without failure under high axial compression. In this system, base column and its bed are divided by hemispheric surface. In this paper, we explain the mechanism and the detail of the system at first, and report its fundamental properties and restoring force characteristics obtained through an axial compression test and several shear-bending tests with axial compression. As a result, the support has sufficient compressive strength under axial compression and the proposed structural system consists of the support and the column has superior flexibility and desirable restoring force characteristics.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate strength of H-shaped brace constrained flexural buckling having unconstrained area at both ends. It is assumed that brace and hollow section constraining flexural buckling deform continuously. The strength is calculated using continuous bar model of non-uniform section. The propriety of strength evaluation methods was verified by structural experiments. As a result, it was shown that because of having unconstrained area the collapse mode changes from bending yield of constraining member to yield of the brace caused by axial force and additional bending moment at unconstrained area.

Design formula has been proposed for local tensile yield strength of unstiffened type connection between concrete filled circular steel tubular column and beam flange. The local connection interface region has been classified to two regions; around the middle region of the flange, and the rest flange edge region. The steel in this edge region has been assumed to be yield fully under the Von Mises' yield condition, In the partially yield middle region, its stress block factor has been assumed to be a function of the full yield strength of the tubular steel relative to the flange's one.

In this paper we describe an experimental study on composite bearing-wall consisting of steel plate and viscoelastic material. As the result of the dynamic loading experiment of the wall, the wall in a state of tension field has energy absorption capacity are observed. This wall is assumed an aggregate of the banded members. The characteristics of banded members are studied by dynamic loading experiment, and the energy absorption capacity of the wall is nearly equal to the total energy absorption capacity of the banded members. The shear deformation of viscoelastic material generates energy absorption of the wall. And the characteristics of this material are shown by experimental equations which is formed of temperature, amplitude of shear deformation, thickness of the material and frequency of loading.

The development to apply CFRP as a structural material of building is being done. As a first step, a series of research to use CFRP pipes to Double-Layer Lattice Shell is progressing. A basic experimental study about mechanical properties of the CFRP pipe is argued by this paper. With several temperature parameters, the experiments to grasp mechanical properties of CFRP were done by using test pieces cut out from the CFRP pipes and the CFRP plates (the same composition as the CFRP pipe). As a result, some useful knowledge about mechanical properties including temperature dependence have been obtained.

The hydroelastic response of fixed hollow cylindrical structures surrounded by thin floating ice sheet of finite width during earthquakes is formulated. The 'elastic shell theory is used for structures, whereas the potential flow theory is applied to fluid domain. The sea ice is idealized as the annular rigid boundary that is connected with semi-infinite free surface. The hydrodynamic pressure is obtained in closed form by domain division method. Wet mode properties in beam mode of hollow cylindrical structure are evaluated by Rayleigh-Ritz method. Modal superposition approach is used to calculate the earthquake response against horizontal ground motion. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the changes in hydrodynamic pressures and earthquake responses due to the width of ice sheet.
