A technique has been proposed to estimate the strength of cement paste by using the drilling type surface strength tester developed by the authors. In the present paper, firstly a bit tip having regulated size of grains of diamond was used in order to evaluate the inner strength variation of cement paste. It was proved, however, that the variation was mainly resulted from unevenness of the diamond on the bit tip at the early stages of its use. Next, some kinds of improved bit were manufactured, and a bit showing the most stable performance was selected in a selecting test. Another series of drilling tests using cement paste was carried out, and the improvement of the stability of drill speed was confirmed. Based on the test data, a formula for the estimation of compressive strength was proposed.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the motion of the conical vortex which lead to the large level of the negative pressure near the leading comer by LES analysis when flow attack oblique to the flat roof. First the present LES model is validated for the prediction of the pressure characteristics on the roof through comparison with the experimental data. Next, we study the pressure characteristics associated with the motion of the conical vortex in uniform and turbulent flows by using the computed results. As a result, it is clarified that the flow structures near the stagnation point rapidly change by the characteristics of uniform and turbulent flows and result in the strong conical vortex associated with large suction on a roof.

The total energy input into a structure exerted by an earthquake is mainly governed by the total mass and the effective period of the structures. The effective period of elastic structures is their fundamental natural periods. When the structure is plastified, the structure is softened and thus the effective period of structure is elongated by the plastification of structure. The influence of the plastification on the effective period is specified by the type of the restoring force characteristics of the plastified element, the extent of plastification and the pattern of distribution of plastification. In this paper, effective periods are dealt with generally by using various types of restoring force characteristics. Obtained formulae are verified their applicability by direct response analyses.

In this paper, superposition of the waves propagated from multiple piers of an elevated road is examined. By considering dynamic interaction between the soil and the foundation, a numerical simulation was carried out from the viewpoint of a spectral shape of traffic-induced ground vibration. The excitation force due to a pier was computed based on the record at a point of the ground surface near the pier. Based on this, the response at a point distant from the pier was computed by superposing the waves propagated from multiple piers, in which excitation forces were assumed to have the same amplitude but randomly different phase. It was found that the proposed method can give a fairly good result.

New bang-bang type semi-active control based on the theory of dissipative systems is proposed in this paper. The bang-bang type semi-active control has been adopted mainly for the vibration control of civil structures. The switching schedule of the damping coefficient of the semi-active damper has been determined with the value of the time derivative of the Lyapunov function, generally defined as the sum of the kinetic and the potential energies of the structural systems. The objective of the conventional bang-bang type control is to maximize the rate of the energy dissipation and the control scheme cannot deal with vibration suppression performance of the specific control outputs such as the absolute displacement of each floor from a quantitative aspect. We propose a new Lyapunov function using the basic result of the dissipative systems theory in this paper. With the theory of the dissipative systems the Lyapunov matrix is obtained as the solution to LMIs (Linear Matrix Inequalities) to achieve a smaller L_2 norm of the control output of interest. A design example for a semi-active control of a 3-story civil structure is presented to show the validity of the current analysis and the effectiveness of the proposed semi-active control.

Due to past several earthquakes, damage of elevators, especially in rope, were reported. It is quite important to maintain the function of an elevator for rescue activity after a severe earthquake. This study clarifies the correlation between vibration of a main rope of an elevator and the characteristics of a building (stiffness and damping factor). Influence of the setting position of a driving machine is also investigated. A model of a thirty-story building with elevator system is analyzed on vibration modes and dynamics responses to several seismic ground motions. It is shown that two-elevator system, which sets a transfer floor in the middle height of a building, can reduce the response of a main rope, and that increased damping factor can also reduce the response.

A coupled vibration control is a method for reducing earthquake responses by connecting buildings with different periods using dampers. In this paper, two single-degree-of-freedom systems connected with a hysteresis damper are used for the vibration model. The objective of this paper is to reveal the general characteristics of coupled vibration control structures analytically. The criteria of the response control effect is the reduction of the deformation of the buildings. The condition of optimum damper and the relationship between the response control effect and the combination of building are investigated. By comparing the deformation of the buildings connected with the optimum damper to that of the rigidly connected buildings, the equation to predict the effect of vibration control can be obtained.

This paper describes evaluation of torsional response by equivalent linearization method considering higher mode response. In the authors' study, the equivalent linearization method (after named NoLMM) considering higher mode response for multi-story symmetric buildings was proposed. In this study, NoLMM method is extended for torsional response and adapted to single-story unsymmetric buildings. The NoLMM analysis results agree with that of time domain dynamic analysis. It is important to consider not only higher mode responses but also modes interaction in the analysis of unsymmetric buildings. Accuracy of analysis results is improved by considering failure process.

A structural capacity for an actual reinforced concrete structure affected by alkali-silica reaction, called by ASR, is evaluated by the elasto-plasticity analyses. The objective structure is a turbine generator foundation having a table deck with ASR and columns to support equipments. In this study, the varieties of the concrete properties and the expansion of the table deck with ASR are evaluated by conducting the analyses under the seismic design load or the ultimate seismic load in addition to the mechanical operating loads and the expansion load. As the result, it is confirmed that the impact on the varieties of the expansion is enormous for the structural capacity in the seismic design load, but the impact on the varieties of the concrete properties and the expansion is slight in the ultimate load.

The main objective of this research is to develop the vibration control procedure of several modes for large span structures using distributed MTMDs (multiple tuned mass dampers). In order to examine fundamental and real behavior of the MTMD procedure, shaking table tests with a small-scaled arch model are executed. Firstly, to confirm frequency response characteristics of the MTMD procedure, tests using harmonic excitation are executed and we compare test results with analytical results. Then, we study controlling performance of the MTMD procedure under random excitation. Finally, we study robust performance of the MTMD procedure against frequency changes of structures that is important issue for real applications of the proposed method to the vibration control of several modes at a time.

In this paper, numerical analysis of wooden frames with hanging walls made of mud plaster subjected to horizontal load is carried out and the analysis results are compared with their experimental tests. This analytical model consists of mud plaster wall elements, connection elements between wall and timbers, elastic wooden skeletons and elasto-plastic end springs for a wooden frame. Results are as follows: 1) The horizontal resistant force characteristics of wooden frames with hanging walls are strongly influenced by the column size and fastening condition between columns and wooden bases. 2) The total number of columns is in proportion to the horizontal resistant force of hanging walls. 3) The combination of a hanging wall and sidewalls has the maximum resistant force that is larger than the sum of their each resistance force.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate stiffness and strength of hybrid timber beams reinforced with steel plates and carbon fiber sheets. Steel-reinforced beams are attached by lag screw. And carbon-fiber-reinforced beams are attached by resorcinol resin. Parameters of bending test iarethe span of specimen, the pitch and the number of line of lag screw, and the thickness of carbon fiber sheet. Stiffness and strength of hybrid timber beams are evaluated by slip stiffness between glue-laminated beam and reinforced material. Stiffness and strength of steel-reinforced beam is evaluated by slip stiffness of lag screw, and these of carbon-fiber-reinforced beam is evaluated under assumption that slip stiffness between glue-laminated beam and carbon fiber sheet is infinity.

In this paper, I propose the generation method of the vulnerability curve for a traditional timber house in consideration of the maximum shear force distribution. The vulnerability curve is made from the maximum displacement responses of a house by Monte Carlo simulation. This report shows the minimum total number of simulation instances for one house. The results may be summarized as follows: the minimum number of instances for one house is 20 for the average and standard variation of a vulnerability curve. A simplified vulnerability curve generation method with one instance is also proposed. The 50 percentile of this simplified method is 10cm/s greater than the 50 percentile of the proposed method with 20 instances.

A portion-wall test method is presented in this paper to predict the shear performance of Japanese traditional mud walls based on their lateral load carrying mechanism. It was already clarified through our recent research that this mechanism consisted of the four resistant structural components. The three kinds of portion-wall specimen, cut from the mud wall considering the carrying mechanism, were applied to predict the hysteretic envelope of shear force-deformation curve and also the bracing unit multiplier of the original mud wall. The predictions for the four different types of mud wall specification were much similar in all cases to the corresponding experimental results of shear wall test, and the validity of the proposed method was thus confirmed.

A wooden prefabricated truss system utilizing Japanese medium- and low-quality timbers has been developed in order to promote the effective use of these timbers. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of the dispersion of stiffness of members on the stress magnitude and displacement in designing the wooden prefabricated truss. Monte Carlo analysis revealed the maximum stress of the members to be 1.2 times greater than the stress analyzed by the standard Young's modulus (E_0) due to the dispersion of Young's modulus. The maximum displacement of nodes is also greater than the displacement analyzed by E_0. It is suitable to use the 5% lower limit of Young's modulus based on full-size tests of timbers considering the deformation of nodes.

It has been important to evaluate building's structural performance to wind action as much as earthquake. The aims of this study are to understand elasto-plastic wind response characteristics and propose elasto-plastic wind response analysis methods of detached timber-frameworked buildings. In this paper, at first, an analytical model of the building is shown, then wind force characteristics acting on small-scale and low-rise buildings and their simulation method are discussed. Next, pseudo-dynamic tests are carried out to timber-frameworked shear walls, then wind response characteristics obtained from the tests are described. Finally, analyses using the restoring force characteristics models that has been proposed by the authors are conducted and validities are considered by comparison with results of the pseudo-dynamic test.

A new seismic retrofitting technique using compressive bracings for existing R/C frames with soft story was experimentally tested. The bracing is composed of steel pipe in-filled high-strength mortar and its ends are designed to resist compressive bracing without tensile resistance. These make the conductivity of the seismic retrofit easier, the cost of works lower and the time of works shorter. Experimental testes were carried out to evaluate the reinforcing effect. Three strengthening specimens with the bracings and, for comparison, a non-strengthening specimen were constructed with a 1/5 dimensional scale factor. All specimens were tested under inelastic reversal loading. Test results indicated that the soft story was successfully seismic retrofitted, and that the lateral strength increased by approximately twice that of the non-strengthening frame. Test results also showed that the governing failure mechanism in the soft story was successfully shifted from a column sidesway mechanism to a total collapse mechanism.

An increasing number of studies have recently been made on lap splices of main rebars overlapped in the beam depth direction or lap splices of main rebars placed end to end with splint-bars. In this study, lap splices of main rebars with splint-bars were used at the midspan of the beam. To examine the properties of the beam when the lap length was reinforced with U-shaped bars, a bending test was carried out. As a result of the test, it was found that the allowable stress design was acceptable for long-term stress even when the lap splices discussed in this paper were used. A method was also proposed for evaluating the bond splitting strength. This method was developed by making modifications to evaluation formulas currently in use, to enable consideration of the reinforcing effects of U-shaped bars.

Buckling-restrained braces, which satisfy criteria of preventing flexural buckling of restraining members, can form out-of-plane buckling mode if stiffness of their connections and girder are small. In order to prevent out-of-plane buckling, buckling load must be larger than the maximum axial force of brace. This paper addresses that the required stiffness of both connections and girder to prevent out-of-plane buckling. Based on observation of loading tests, buckling-restrained braces formed buckling mode as stiffness of girder became less than the required stiffness. As a result, the required stiffness is useful for criteria of buckling-restrained braces to prevent out-of-plane buckling.

This paper relates the hysteretic plastic energy input E_H of multi degree of freedom (MDOF) systems. First, the simple empirical rule between the ratio of E_H to the seismic total energy input E and the ratio of the yield strength to the response acceleration spectrum is shown by numerical results for single degree of freedom (SDOF) systems. This rule is applied to predict E_H for MDOF systems from the design acceleration spectrum and the modal analysis. The time domain analyses of MDOF systems under generated earthquake motions fitted to the design spectrum show the validity of the presented method.

Steel buildings generally use anchor-bolt-yield-type exposed column-bases. These column-bases show slip-type restoring force characteristics, and the cyclic behavior of column-bases with multi-rows of anchor-bolts becomes very complicated. The authors have proposed non-slip-type column-bases using a wedge device to minimize slip. This paper describes an experimental study on both non-slip-type and slip-type column-bases subjected to cyclic loadings for comparison with models of restoring force characteristics proposed by the authors. The following observations were made: 1) The non-slip-type column-bases showed no slip behavior. 2) The non-slip-type column-bases with multi-rows of anchor bolts provided self-centering performance. 3) The slip-type column-bases with multi-rows of anchor bolts showed complicated cyclic curves. However, the cyclic behavior of the non-slip-type column-bases was very simple.

In this paper reinforcing method by screwing a high-tension bolt into anchor-bolt is proposed to improve plastic deformation capacity of anchor-bolts in exposed column bases of existing steel buildings. The effect of this reinforcement is verified from tensile test and pull-out test of anchor-bolts, where the maximum strengths and total deformation capacity of the reinforced anchor-bolts are predicted well by the proposed method, and additional length of the hole gives the large plastic deformation capacity to the anchor-bolts.

This paper presents the strain behavior of compression concrete at temperatures up to 800℃. The test specimens were made of three mixtures with water-binders ratio ranging from 0.225 to 0.50 and the room-temperature compressive strength were ranging from 53 N/mm^2 to 120N/mm^2. The axial and lateral strain (elastic, plastic, thermal and transient thermal strain) of the cylindrical concrete specimens at high temperatures were measured and the flow rule are determined by the test results. The compression concrete subjected to elevated temperature were analyzed using the nonlinear three-dimensional finite element method.

Tension tests of friction type high strength bolted joints at elevated temperature were conducted in order to obtain the relationship between shear force and shear deformation of high strength bolts. High strength bolts do not fracture at temperature above 500℃ while shear deformation of bolts are less than the diameter of bolts. On the basis of these experimental results, we propose a formulation for the relationship between shear force and shear deformation in consideration of the residual post-peak shear strength. With this formulation, we can analysis the structural fire behavior of steel frame having high strength bolted joint.
