In order to clarify the factors influencing performance in reading aloud single Kanji and Kana letters in a case of pure alexia, longitudinal analysis was performed. Following results were revealed. 1 ; In both acute and chronic phase (one and 6 months after CVA), Kana was to be easier to read than Kanji, when frequency and strokes of Kanji was not controlled. 2; When frequency and strokes of Kanji was controlled in acute phase, there was no difference between Kanji of high frequency-a few strokes and Kana, but in chronic phase, there was no difference between all Kanji of high frequency and Kana. 3; The factor of greatest influence on reading performance of Kanji was frequency. The effects of strokes on that performance was interactive with frequency. 4 ; In Kana on reading performance, there was no effect of strokes in both acute and chronic phase.

Conservative treatment mainly consisting of corticosteroid inhalation therapy was undertaken on 5 cases of non-specific granulomas of the larynx. Among these cases, 3 cases were intubation granuloma and 2 cases were idiopathic granuloma. One case of intubation granuloma was cured within 6 months by inhalation of dexamethasone sodium phosphate by using a nebulizer. The other 4 cases were treated with beclomethasone dipropionate inhaler (BDI) . All of these cases were cured within about 1 month to three and half months. We discussed the action of corticosteroid against non-specific granuloma of the larynx as well as the mechanism of granuloma development. It was thought that inhalation therapy by using BDI is a method which is easily applied in an outpatient clinic and one of useful treatments against non-specific granuloma of the larynx.

  • —Observation of articulatory movement using electro tooth-palatography—

This study investigated the tongue movement of lateral articulation which is seen in error sounds of vowel /i/, /∫, t∫, d _??_, ç, s, ts, dz/ and consonants followed by the vowel /i/ or semi vowel /j/. Lateral articulation was observed by electro tooth-palatography.
    The results were as follows.
    1. The tongue came into complete contact with the hard palate and all occlusal and palatal surfaces of the maxillary molars on the non-air-stream side of the dental arch.
    2. On the air-stream side, the tongue did not come into contact with any molar occlusal surfaces but only with the palatal surface of the preterminal molar while producing vowel /i/ and fricatives of lateral articulation.
    3. The tongue came into contact with all molars on both sides of the dental arch while producing plosives and liquids of lateral articulation but these palatograms showed deviate patterns to the non-air-stream side as a whole.
From these results, articulatory movement of lateral articulation can be defined as follows. After the tongue dorsum contacts the hard palate and air enters the oral cavity along the palatal surface of the terminal molar, sounds are produced by the margin of the tongue and the palatal surface of the preterminal molar, then air is forced out from the occlusal surface of the molar to the buccal groove, namely laterally, rather than from the middle of the palate.

The tension between ideas and facts is characterized as a duality between “something going on”and “something being wrong”. Example 1 is that formants can be estimated by a simple and seemingly absurd linear combination of cepstral coefficients. Example 2 is the apparently simplistic hypothesis that the second equivalent spectral peak F2' is the resonance of the front cavity of the vocal tract.
