Recently, the monitoring techniques are demanded in the automated cutting process in the machining center. In this study, infrared thermography is applied to the end milling process for the monitoring of cutting process, in which thermal image around tool is taken by infrared thermography. Using this infrared measurement, temperature of cutting tool was measured under the various cutting condition with different cutting speed, width of cut and feed rate. Moreover, the results were compared with the cutting force measured simultaneously. It was clarified that strong correlation is between the tool temperature and cutting force depending the cutting state.

Conventional transparent film thickness measurement methods such as spectroscopy are basically capable of measuring a single point at a time, and the spatial resolution is limited. We have developed a novel areal film thickness and topograpgy measurement method by three-wavelength interferometry. It estimates both the profiles of front and back surfaces and the thickness distribution of a transparent film simultaneously by model-based separation of two overlapped signals in the interferogram. The validity of the proposed method is proved by computer simulations and preliminary experiments.

Conventional transparent film thickness measurement methods such as spectroscopy acquire basically a single measurement point at a time, and the spatial resolution is limited. We have developed a novel areal film thickness measurement system by extending the Global Model Fitting algorithm developed for three-wavelength interferometric surface profiling. It estimates the film thickness distribution from a color image captured by a color camera and three-wavelength light source. The key features are: (1) high spatial resolution, (2) high-speed measurement, (3) low cost and simple optics, and (4) no preliminary calibration required.

The biped robot which aims to be able to work in same environment of the human society is expected. Operating in its environment, the falling down of the biped robot has to be prevented. However, researching biped robot of double support phase is less than single support phase. Therefore, analyzing the dynamics for attitude control the biped robot of double support phase is prevented falling down by slope.

The fast and accurate positioning control of serial link robot for industry has a problem of vibration which occurs when robot arm is operated. The purpose of this study is to design the vibration control system which is considered the change of vibration characteristic as a result of the change of robot configuration. Before, modal analysis and control experiment with acceleration feedback was carried out in four robot configurations that supposed the motion of extend its arm. Therefore, the effect of vibration control in four robot configurations is confirmed.

This paper presents a method for generating the development of a sheet metal product. In this work, Dynamic Programming is adopted in order to obtain the optimal development and it is implemented using API (Application Programming Interface) of SolidWorks (a 3-D CAD system). The system gives some optimal solutions quickly, which are practically enough to be used in the industrial situations. Furthermore, it is found that, when the shape is complex, the development may be piled up. In such case, we show that suitable development can be obtained by adding dividing points.

Automobile parts such as welding nuts, slave and w-gear are produced by cold forging in Nichiwa Co. Ltd.. The products (with complex shape) are usually formed through forging stage of 5 to 6. So, the die designs in respective forging stage are needed. The work takes much time and it is very difficult to determine respective die dimensions in order that products with high precision can be obtained. In this study, the design system for multi-stage dies in cold forging was developed, and then the design system was applied to an automobile part with flange. From the result, it was found that the product with good configuration in each forging stage could be obtained using this design system. It was also possible to design them in short time in comparison to previous working time.

In recent years, the companies which aim at the making efficient and improved quality of design development by practical use of a CAE system were on the increase, so that, for the improvement in analysis technology which used the CAE system, the public research and development institute researcher of Kyushu each prefecture gathered, and organized the 'Kyushu CAE study group'. As part of the activities, using the CAE system owned by each prefecture, the stress state for the inside pressure acting on shrink-fitting compound cylinder (product made from soft steel) was analyzed, and compared the analytical result with the theoretical value.

A new NC table driven by twin linear-motors has been developed for us machining curved surfaces by lathe turning. The key factor for this turning method is to trace trajectories on a designed surface. The NC table requires a dynamic response that leads to a rapid motion with high acceleration and jerk. We propose a new NC table with acceleration and deceleration of more than 10 G with the use of a twin linear-motor, this table enables high-speed contouring machining. This study describes the dynamic performance and vibration control of the tandem table developed is reported. Motion trajectories and vibrations are evaluated from the measurement results. The capability and effectiveness of the NC table developed for machining 3D surfaces are also reported.
