Micro milling tools made of diamond were developed in order to machine ultraprecision aspheric mold of tungsten carbide precisely. In this report, micro milling tools made of single crystal daiamond and CVD diamond were fabricated and the changes of the tool wear, the form accuracy and the surface roughness were compared with the PCD tool and the resinoid bonded diamond wheel.

Recently, micro air vehicle (MAV) is carried out to development to rescue and so on. Now helicopter type MAV is main stream. However, aircraft of current fly difficult to steady control and efficiency flight for influence size effect. Therefore, we develop MAV with biomimetics that is applying Engineered; reproduce artificially structure and function of the creature existent in natural world. Creature has high flight performance despite of small wing is existent in natural world. That is dragonfly. Dragonfly′s flight has high flight performances. Because we carried out to investigate flight characteristic of dragonfly to development of micro air vehicle (MAV) model of dragonfly. We carried out to investigate micro structure on wings of dragonfly, because we think that micro structure affect flight characteristic of dragonfly. These Wings have microstructure of spikes and comb shape on surface and reading edge. We fabricated artificial wings with micro spikes, with comb shape and without. As a result artificial wing with micro spike generated more smoothly flow and more vortex than without micro structure. Artificial wing with comb shape generated more smoothly flow and large vortex than without micro structure. Therefore artificial wings with micro structures have effect of lower drag force and upper lift force.

The amount of metals which has been dumped and accumulated as E-waste to date reaches a scale comparable to natural reserves. These metals are called urban mines and collect attentions recently. To make full use of today′s urban mines as well as those in future, it is necessary to design products and their recycling processes considering future reverse supply chains in a strategic viewpoint. To this end, this study attempts to mathematically formulate the problem focusing on the interdependency among product structure, recycling processes, and reverse supply chain network. A simplified calculation example is also provided to illustrate the formulation.

Small waste electrical and electronic equipment (SWEEE) consists of crucial metals for the realization of their functions. If recycled properly, SWEEE becomes a critical element of urban mines in Japan, which provide stable supply of such crucial metals to manufacturers. Simulation and visualization of the flow of SWEEE at the end-of-life stage are useful for the strategic design of urban mines. The paper introduces a simulation and visualization technique of the recycle flow of SWEEE with life cycle simulation. In particular, the visualization technique provides a novel view for analyzing simulated recycle flow resulting from life cycle simulation.

Recently, there are many mechanical parts that are difficult to machine because of complex shapes. A new category on machining these, by 5-axis machining center, so-called ″skillful machining″ has been appeared. This kind of machining method depends on the development and the progress of 3D-CAD/CAM system. But in this case, the generation of tool path for machining of the free curved three dimensional shapes is treated as a function of CAD/CAM system. In some cases, a unexpectd profile error often occurs because of the set of tolerance of the profile by the divided straight lines and the circular arc curves. In this study, to machine the axisymmetric complex curved surfaces with high accuracy, the tool path is calculated directory from the 3D-CAD data and the mathematicaly expressed data. The accuracy of the machined profiles are evaluated and compared.

In general practice, a geometric tool-path for CNC (computer numerical controlled) machine tools or NC positioning systems is mainly composed of linear motion segments, or so called the G1 commands. This approach exhibits serious limitations in terms of achieving the desired part geometry and productivity in high-speed machining. Velocity and acceleration discontinuities occur at the junction points of consecutive segments if they are not blended continuously. To solve this problem, a corner smoothing algorithm is proposed in this paper, which fits minimum curvature quintic B-splines to blend the adjacent straight lines together. The proposed transition scheme ensures C2 continuity transitions and a minimum curvature geometry delivering the fastest cycle time without violating the axis acceleration limits. The cornering error is controlled analytically allowing the user to set the desired cornering tolerance. At last, a limited bell-shaped acceleration profile is generated to realize smooth feed motion.

Mechanical properties of hard coatings are usually characterized by nano-indentation, scratch-test and ball-on-disk friction-test. However, the durability of the hard coatings under practical usage sometimes does not coincide the results of these tests. Development of a new method which can evaluate their durability under practical usage is expected. We proposed a new friction test for evaluating the durability of hard coatings in the last spring meeting, which utilized the friction welding apparatus. One of the problems of this method was that the load is too high for our purpose. In this work, we have used a new apparatus which can lighten the friction load, and evaluated the durability of a DLC film.

We have been exploring a Ni-free material showing stable self-propagating reaction for medical use, and reported at the last meeting that Ti-Si multilayer films of Ti:Si = 5:4 could be a promising candidate. Further comprehensive research including the effect of thickness ratio of Ti/Si constituent layer, bilayer thickness and total thickness on the self-propagating reaction behavior is underway. It was found that the Ti-Si multilayer films of Ti:Si = 1:2 also showed intensive self-propagating reaction. The multilayer films with the bilayer thickness of 25 nm appeared to need the least energy to ignite the self-propagating reaction regardless of the Ti/Si thickness ratio.
