We have fabricated bottom contact CNT-FET devices on flattened electrodes. Our devices had larger numbers of CNT direct junctions compared to non-flattened devices due to stronger interaction between CNTs and modified SiO
2 surfaces. Although all of our flattened and non-flattened devices showed ambipolar characteristic, flattened electrodes devices had better symmetry of transfer characteristic.

We have tried to process many materials by acting the deoxidization/oxidization reactions of electron and hole provided by irradiating an ultraviolet ray on photocatalyst and fluorescent substance, and by applying the mechanical scratching action of photocatalyst and abrasive grit. The future of U-RAM depends on the settlement of the subject whether this technology well processes pure metal, alloy and inorganic compound etc, practically. The issues what kinds of materials the U-RAM well process, or why the U-RAM can/cannot process the materials remain. The chemical reaction is much in polishing the easy-oxidized materials of copper, nickel, aluminum titanium and iron etc. The use of Al
2O
3 for that of TiO
2 cannot bring the flat surface. Easy flattening of bearing steel is due to easy oxidation/dissolution. It is possible to flatten stainless steel, even if the passive film forms. Though cobalt/cobalt alloys are the difficult-oxidized materials, the decomposition of Cathilon in ultraviolet-ray irradiation acts to oxidize/dissolve them. The nitride becomes as flat as the grain boundary of crystals appears, though it is the very difficult-oxidized material. The U-RAM is difficult to apply for processing diamond.

Recently, demand for minimally invasive surgery has rapidly increased, especially in the spinal surgery. Surgical resections of spinal column, namely, backbone are frequently conducted using a diamond grinding stone and a high-speed spindle tool in the surgery. The resections have often brought serious nerve root heat injury, because high heat is generated in grinding point close to the nerve root. To address this issue, many studies such as investigations of machining characteristics of bone have been conducted, and various medical technologies and devices such as a coolant supply method have been proposed and developed. However, requirement for suppressing the heat injury in the spinal surgery has currently exceeded the capabilities of the above technologies and devices. To overcome this problem, grinding experiments on bone were performed using commercial diamond grinding tools for clarifying the grinding characteristics. Based on the results that clogging on the tool surfaces is a dominant issue of generating high heat in wet grinding, diamond grinding tools coated by titanium oxide were developed in the hopes of decreasing the clogging by improving hydrophilic property of the tool surface. Grinding experiments showed that the newly developed grinding tools successfully suppressed the clogging and kept the grinding temperature below a critical level for the surgery operation, as compared with the commercial tool.
