The sawdust of Sugi (
Cryptomeria japonica) sapwood was carbonized at 300°C for 1h under oxygen-containing atmosphere such as 5%O
2+95%N
2, 10%O
2+90%N2, or air. The charcoals carbonized under 10%O
2+90%N
2 and air had high capacity of adsorption for both NaOH and NaHCO
3 in aqueous solution. The adsorption of NH
3 gas on the charcoals also increased with an increase in oxygen concentration of the atmosphere. It is suggested that the acidic groups on the charcoals increased on the carbonization under oxygen-containing atmosphere. Increasing carboxyl groups on the charcoal prepared under air was confirmed by IR and
13C-NMR spectra.
