    Carbonization process of anthracite was studied and the velocity of gas evolution was found to be approximated very well by Bangham's formula for the velocity of adsorption. Accurate method of measuring contact resistance of carbon powder was devised, whose error being within 3%. Deterioration processes of carbon powder due to mechanical shock, electrical spark, humidity, oxidation etc. were studied and discussed.

    An investigation of the effect of impurities on the contact voltaye drop and copper picking of electrical carbon brush is reported in this paper.
    Results obtained are as follows.
    (1) The contact voltage drop of negative brush (motor notation) is suddenly lowered as soon as water particles stick on the brush-copper slip ring contacts, while for the positive brush (motor notation) the effect of waterparticles is not observed.
    (2) The anomalous phenomenon of contact voltage drop for the negative brush is related intimately to the copper picking of brush.
    (3) If the surface of copper slip ring is covered with oxide films, the tendency of copper picking of negative brush is considerably diminished, although the contact voltage drop is lowered.
    (4) Various impurities, H20, CCl4, NaCl watersolution lower the contact voltage drop of negative brush and cause copper picking, and when the current density of brush is zero, these phenomena are not observed. While the other impurities, benzene, and benzine, cause no change in the contact voltage drop and the contact surface of brush. It is concluded that the anomalous phenomena of the conact voltagedrop and copper picking of brush with impurities are due to the electrolytic phenomena.

    この實駿的研究は炭素刷子と刷子保持器の特性を研究するためになされた。この實験には模型整流子が用いられ, 摺動接触時における刷子の振動及び接触の機構が探究された。
    實験の結果次の事項が結論された。
    (1) 刷子の振動は刷子とセグメント間の摩擦に伴つて生するものであり, 要素から成立つ, 一方は直接セグメントとの衝突によつて起り, 他方は囘轉機自體から生じた強制振動によつて起る。衝突による振動では, 刷子自體の振動が最も重要な事柄であり, 同様に強制振動による振動では保持器のバネが最も重要な事柄である。
    (2) 刷子の振動の特性は刷子の材質に左右されるぼかりでなく, 外部の振動にもまた著るしく左右される。
    この報告では上記の振動防止の一案についても取り扱つてている。

    In this paper we investigated the graphite anodes in the electrolysis of aqueous solutions.
    We examined the effects of current density, of temperature, and of concentration of electrolyte on the consumption of carbon electrodes in the forms of gas and of sludge.
    In the electrolysis of solutions of sulphuric acid, or sulphates over wide range of H+ ion concentrations, we found that the consumption of carbon both as CO2 or CO and as sludge was far greater in the presence of sulphate ionthan in the absence of it, and that remarkable amount of CO, the ratio of which to CO2 was 0.12-0.15, evolved. But in the electrolysis of brine, even the presence of 6/10 N SO4 did not seem to have such effects.

    Four methods of uniformity test of carbon electrodes are described, (i) drop method (ii) resonance vibration method (iii) a. e. bridge method (iv) induced e. m. f. method.Results obtained by our experiments show that the a. c. bridge method seems to be the best method.

    The breaking strength of nipple, which is lossely connected with neighbouring electrodes and exposes a gap between their contact surfaces, for bending load, denotes low value, between 50-60 per-cent, as compared with tight joining state, and it easily break down.
    On the other hand, its observed that the transverse strength of nipple, calculated as a column having equal size with its core diameter, indicates half magnitude of its test-piece streugth.
    These experimental results suggest that attentive treatments are necessary, expressly for small size electrodes, against anomalous shocks by crumbling of scraps orcareless operations.

    Statistical investigations of carbon brushes in use for the main motor of an electric car have shown that rejections on account of failure amount to 30% of the total number in service on electric cars, electric locomotives or on the private as well as the Government Railways.
    As a result of a close observation of the failure mechanism, it has been disclosed that cracks inherent in pitch coke, base material of brush, are responsible t for such failure leading to scaling; pitch coke has a layer structure easily coming to failure under a negligible pressure or developing cracks, if not failure. Then, the form of pitch coke powder, form factor and frictional coefficient has been determined and it has been found the larger form factor m is accmpanied by the higher frictional coefficient so that failure percentage of such powder rises correspondingly.
    It follows from this that a brush block made of coke powder with smaller form factor will have a layer structure to such small extent that scaling will not occur.

    For impact strength of carbon brush, an impact testing machine can be used, that is, a loaded brush specimen is placed on the spring and impact will be given by revolution of the spring under varying conditions of impact number and brush loads.
    In this way, tests have been made to decide whether failure of brush is caused by falling impact or by the force working in the direction of revolution due to frictional factor which occurs between the spring and the falling brush block and throwing the block against the brush grip.
    With regard to the direction of the layer resulting from press-forming of brush material, percentage of failures is predominant in the direction of liability to scaling and tends to rise as the gap between the brush and the brush grip increases. Further, higher frictional coefficient causes higher percentage of failure; this can be proved by a test showing that there will be no failure if the friction of the brush on the revolving spring can be prevented by some device.
    It can be concluded that prevention of brush failure can be assured by elimination of a layer structure, small frictional coefficient and minimum gap between the brush and the brush grip.
